I live within walking distance of RFK. It was a shock when the Redskins scuttled to the 'burbs, but now that they're gone, there are much better uses for that site. RFK is adjoined by extensive parking lots and the DC United practice fields. These sweep all the way to Benning Road, across which lies Langston Golf Course, which in turn abuts the National Arboretum and the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens across the river. (A pedestrian/biking bridge is planned.) And all this is riverfront property.

The Anacostia corridor has the potential to be an extraordinary park/playground stretching through a rapidly rejuvenating part of the city. My preference would be to turn the RFK tract and associated parking lots into a youth sports complex. I don't know how many multi-purpose soccer/lacrosse/football fields it could accommodate, but I'll guess 20 or more. (Think of the Germantown soccerplex if you know the area.) Then add accommodations for kayaking, canoeing, and crew along the river, and tie in the bike paths which will soon push all the way upriver and connect to an extensive network beyond Bladensburg and College Park ... and you have a remarkable sports and recreation asset for the east side.

This is just one of the ideas being bandied about. Fingers crossed.

As long as you pay for it yourselves with no tax money I don’t give a fig what is done with the land.
