Free rides for Milwaukee bus riders after union apologizes for stoppage

(MILWAUKEE) -- Milwaukee union leaders say they're sorry for a work stoppage last week, but cannot promise there won't be another strike.

The county says everyone will be able to ride free today because of the inconvenience of last week's strike.

Leaders of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 998 held a news conference overnight to apologize to riders.

They say they did not walk off the job last week to punish the public.

The union says they are willing to have an arbitrator settle their differences, and accuse MCTS of refusing to allow that to happen.

However union leaders gave no timetable as to when the next round of talks could begin.

"I apologize to the riding public. We don't know what's going to happen in the next couple of weeks." ATU President Local 988 James Macon said. "I'm not going to promise there's not going to be another job stoppage. It all depends on what happens with our contract."

The drivers say they're concerned about issues like bathroom breaks and having enough full-time employees to pay into the union's pension fund.

Transit officials have said they have offered a fair deal with more pay and have made other concessions.

The buses are running on schedule, and are free today.

Why is the County giving free rides to help the union apologize?

Is the union paying for these "free" rides?

LOL Gotta love liberal thinking.

We’re sorry we hurt you and to prove it we’ll give you something “free”.

Liberals and government in general are usually pretty generous with other people's money

Exactly. Its the liberal way. The same thing happens with inner city riots. A liberal constituency engages in bad behavior and the taxpayers end up paying for it. There never is any personal accountability for the people who actually engaged in the bad behavior.

Reminds me of the headline Lou Grant composed on the old Mary Tyler Moore show.

Mayor Talks, Union Balks, People Walk.

Because the county bureaucrats are on the union’s side. They are just doing a little dance to make it look good before they cave to the union’s demands.

And this is what government wants ALL OF US to use for transportation???

Subject myself to union thugs in order to get anywhere (work, shop, etc)?? I don’t think so!
