Syriza’s historic win puts Greece on collision course with Europe

“There’s a sense that these populist movements are led by people who didn’t go to university with [the leaders] and that if you ignore them they will go away. They’ve been ignored and patronised,” said a senior EU policymaker in Brussels. “The underlying causes are economic. We want a Europe that is delivering tangible benefits to citizens. That’s not what it feels like at the moment.”

The referendum is losing 61-39 with half the vote counted. Sit across the Atlantic and pop some popcorn... Interesting viewing.

It’s about delivering tangible benefits. Eh?

Goobledygook or what?

How many of the countries of the EU now payout more welfare to their Islamic immigrants than pensioners?

Greece has its issues obviously.. But the EU ain’t lilywhite in its intent either IMHO.

That senior EU dude is one warped bloke.

The EU was a scheme to disenfranchise the people of Europe, then steal their money.

Well, if a little socialism is bad, then a lot of socialism will really help.

Europe: Expel the Moslem parasites first. Use the money saved in welfare costs to try to fix Greece.

Not sure what you're implying, but I doubt the EU is any less fascist than the Greek administration is socialist.

Greece has its issues obviously

LoL, well that is an understatement.

It really boils down to this: Greeks want to live in a socialist paradise with wildly irresponsible social welfare spending, but they don't want to pay for it. Period.

I detest the EU and hope it implodes. I think Greece would be right to default, go back to their old currency, and enact real free market reforms - but that is NOT what a majority of Greeks want. They want more freebies, and they don't want to pay for them.

Germany and France along with the rest of the Eurozone should not offer them anything more. Let the Greeks live with their "no" vote. The shock the average Greek is going to get when they realize this radical left government sold them a bill a goods shall be hilarious to watch.

The Eurocrats knew this when they invited Greece in. But their greed overcame common sense, so now Grexit casts a pall on the EU's future.

If Socialism was so bad, would our leaders be forcing it on us against our will?

Excellent, concise analysis, but you omitted the last key phrase...

"It really boils down to this: Greeks want to live in a socialist paradise with wildly irresponsible social welfare spending, but they don't want to pay for it. Period..." They want others to keep on paying for it...

Greece doesn't have a money problem. It has a people problem. The country is filled with people who think that the Daddy gov't should take care of them from cradle to grave. And when it is doesn't, they just have to throw a fit and everything will get better.

I think we are being "treated" to fascism rather than socialism. Fascism has a veneer of Capitalism.

Fascism is not a government, it’s a way of ruling - the same way marriage isn’t a religion, it’s a religious rite.

Fascism was defined by Mussolini as government nationalizing businesses that don’t serve the public interest.

Benito used this idea quite a bit and set up what would be considered a socialist state. Hitler also used Benito’s ideas - seizing property primarily from the Jews.

The Soviets also used fascism in the beginning, but once they had all the property they didn’t need fascism any more.
