DAYTONA BEACH --
NASCAR stirred up controversy this week when officials announced that fans should turn over their confederate flags for the Stars and Stripes, but some fans are still showing up with their flags.
"We have the stars and bars...But the tallest flag out there is the stars and stripes. The way it ought to be, said local NASCAR fan Jim Higginbotham.
Higginbotham said hes proud to be American and a southerner.
"I see that flag I don't see racism at all I see southern pride, he said.
Higginbotham isn't alone. Hundreds of flags were flying high above the crowds at the Daytona International Speedway. Some of the flags read "Heritage not Hate" on the front.
Speedway officials did offer to swap stars and bars for stars and stripes, but the Speedway didn't collect any on Friday and didnt say if they collected any on the Fourth.
"I think they are getting rid of a little bit of history... But frankly it is the 4th of July so if we are going to fly any flag why not just the American flag?" said local NASCAR fan Steve Laszlo.

” I live in an HOA development
I havent had the courage to put it outside yet.
I live in Texas.”
Show them that they may be racist.

“A friend of mine put the Bonnie Blue flag on the front of her car. First question she got asked was, You a cowboys fan?..”
I have a “Bonnie Blue” on the front of my truck, I’ve been asked about the Cowboys and the USAF but it’s been folks from up North.
OK, here goes.
Good for you. Thanks
Bill France Sr. (Big Bill) ran Nascar until 1972, when his son, Bill Jr. took over until 2000. Bill Jr.’s son Brian took over in 2003. (Mike Helton 2000-2003) Since Brian France took over, Nascar has given money to Jesse Jackson, added ethanol to the fuel, and gone after the Confederate flag. The first time Brian France went after the Battle Flag,(2-3 yrs ago) was a few weeks before the Talladega race. There were more flags in the infield than ever before at Talladega. Expect the same result at Daytona tonight. NBC will do their best to not show the infield on camera.
There’s a legitimate distinction between a governmental entity flying that flag and an individual flying it to make an individual statement.
Same with Darlington.
I expect they won’t show them, then claim the request to refrain from using the flag was a success (despite evidence to the contrary). Not that the media wouldn’t try and manipulate what the viewer sees...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (takes breath) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA..
no Race Tonight base on My observation of Weatherunderground info.
I concur with Your statement.
nutscar is gonna find out they have SCREWED THEMSELVES.
Like the General said “YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID”
They are running the dryers. I think they want to start this thing.
I ain’t counting chickens, but the rain is dissipating northwest to southeast. There is a trough oriented along the I-95 corridor, and the rain is shutting down along with daytime heating. That said, at Raintona, ‘12, the Air Titans took the water off the track in 2 1/2 hours. This year at MIS with Air Titan 2.0, the track was dry in 45 minutes. They will run the race if they can drop the green by 2300 EDT.
Good on you!
In this crazy downside up world, NASCAR, too, has become an organization that is rapidly changing away from its founding familys values and its heritage.
Going into the 4th of July weekend, NASCAR, while flying the rainbow fag with Pride, began telling its fans that they had better not fly the Confederate Rebel flag at its race tracks anymore or else!
Then NASCAR sides with NBC to cut ties with Donald Trump over Trumps statements about ILLEGAL immigration.
(Why now? NBC and NASCAR didnt have a problem when he wrote the same sorts of things, with supporting data, in his best-selling book how many YEARS ago???)
Sometimes events happens that make you wonder later if it was more than just a race and maybe this is one of those times.
History took a bow with a scary Daytona near-repeat to end that race after nature did its best to cancel it before it started with a timely rainstorm.
Feb 18, 2001, Dale Jr. won the race just as the #3 was involved terrible last lap crash. His father, Dale Earnhardt Sr., was killed. The Intimidator was gone.
This time, Dale Jr. won the race just as the #3 car was involved in and literally torn apart in a terrible last lap crash. By the Grace of God, the #3 cars driver Austin Dillon walked away.
Afterwards, Austin Dillon told cameras he thinks the cars go too fast and everyone should slow down. He says the racing would be just as good.
Clearly thankful, hes lucky to be alive, let alone walking and talking with only a sore tailbone, so hes more than earned his opinion.
But, at the same time, I cant help but notice how different the #3 cars drivers are then and now. The Intimidator is gone.
Not sure what history doing a repeat like that means, if anything.
But, in the aftermath of last weekend, maybe those traditional fans are right.
NASCAR is gone, too.
I got it backwards: DEI drivers Michael Waltrip and Dale Jr. were first and second at Daytona when Dale Sr. was killed.
My memory was telling me that Dale Jr. won, not Michael.
My apologies. I have no excuse...
