SONGS OF THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCEWilliam Billings was born in Boston in 1746. He is celebrated as the earliest native writer of music in America, and his works were popular with the colonists. New England soldiers who were stationed in the South knew many of his tunes by heart and amused themselves by singing them in camp to the delight of all. In another 85 years their presence in the South would not be welcome, but thats the story of another war.
