George Takei apologizes
facebook ^ | 7/3/15 | George Takei

Posted on 07/03/2015 3:12:51 PM PDT by raccoonradio

I owe an apology. On the eve of Independence Day, I have a renewed sense of what this country stands for, and how I personally could help achieve it. The promise of equality and freedom is one that all of us have to work for, at all times. I know this as a survivor of the Japanese American internment, which each day drives me only to strive harder to help fulfill that promise for future generations.

I recently was asked by a reporter about Justice Clarence Thomas’s dissent in the marriage equality cases, in which he wrote words that really got under my skin, by suggesting that the government cannot take away human dignity through slavery, or though internment. In my mind that suggested that this meant he felt the government therefore shouldn’t be held accountable, or should do nothing in the face of gross violations of dignity. When asked by a reporter about the opinion, I was still seething, and I referred to him as a “clown in blackface” to suggest that he had abdicated and abandoned his heritage. This was not intended to be racist, but rather to evoke a history of racism in the theatrical arts. While I continue to vehemently disagree with Justice Thomas, the words I chose, said in the heat of anger, were not carefully considered.

I am reminded, especially on this July 4th holiday, that though we have the freedom to speak our minds, we must use that freedom judiciously. Each of us, as humans, have hot-button topics that can set-us off, and Justice Thomas had hit mine, that is clear. But my choice of words was regrettable, not because I do not believe Justice Thomas is deeply wrong, but because they were ad hominem and uncivil, and for that I am sorry.

He’s 78, born in 1937. The timing would have been right for him to be sent to the internment camp at age 5 as he claims.

No thanks on the link.

George will always be “seething”. He is a warped queer who gets to play robot on late night TV.

Yes and he called Justice Thomas “a clown in blackface”. Many liberal websites, etc ignored the story...this is why we care. He was getting a pass on it from them.

Kinda rude—it is Family Guy—but you may enjoy

Then he should be mad at F.D.R. , and the Demoncrats for sending him to that place. eh 'great FDR

I was thinking he would have to have been quite young at the time - if his claim is true.

I understand the reason behind the internment. Takai still can’t. Perhaps I wouldn’t either if I were him. I am not, and I support the interment.

I do not support the confiscation of property associated with it, and I think more should have been done to restore those people when the threat was diminished.

There is room for complaint. This world isn’t perfect and that was a war-time setting.

Raising the issue every time you’re in the hot seat isn’t exactly what I’d call a productive thing to do, but then that’s what whiners do. Real men and women with backbone take responsibility for their own actions and stick to that topic when an apology is warranted.

I would challenge Takai to explain how he thinks his overall life was ruined by what took place.

As a star of one of the most popular television series and movie franchises ever, it’s hard for me to cough up a lot of sympathy for the guy.

Overall, he’s had it pretty good.

This does not prevent me from wishing the things associated with the internment hadn’t been necessary. It’s sad that they were.

He lost me when he mentioned the internment camps.

What did those have to do with his rage now?

Good grief. What a bozo. I’m over his sexuality. He never will be.

"I know this as a survivor of the Japanese American internment,..."

were their lots of deaths in those internment camps?

Hyperbole much Mr. Sulu?

I didn’t see an apology to Justice Thomas. What the hell has he ever done with his life compared to Thomas. A freaking actor in space fantasy. Then he posts his apology on facebook where his adoring fans pat him on the back and say “that’s ok”.

Whatever he did in his life and whatever he is yet to do, he will always have “a blackfaced clown’ attached to his name.

A totally miserable POS with no credentials whatsoever.
