SEATTLE (AP) — A Washington woman died from measles in the spring — the first measles death in the U.S. since 2003 and the first in the state since 1990, health officials said Thursday.

The woman lacked some of the measles' common symptoms, such as a rash, so the infection was not discovered until an autopsy, Washington State Department of Health spokesman Donn Moyer said.

This is the 11th case of measles in Washington — and the sixth in Clallam County — this year, Moyer said.

Two contributors:

1. Young idiots who refuse vaccinations.

2. An unlimited supply of illegal aliens from Mexico, many of whom are active carriers of tuberculosis, measles, and, you name it!

I have to wonder how that county faired in terms of “immigrant” “resettlement”?

Other health issues + immunosuppressants make her death ok? Thy made her more likely to contract the disease and die from people who refused vaccinations. Anti-vaxxers are endangering themselves and their families, but they’re really endangering the sick, the elderly, etc. - why you would wish that on your neighbors is beyond me.

This death was in Washington State. Washington and Mexico have identical measles immunization rates.

Perhaps this woman, who was on immunosuppressive therapy, picked up measles from one of the 5% of people for whom the vaccine doesn’t work. 5% of 250 million is a lot of people. Perhaps the person who passed on the measles to this woman could not vaccinate for other medical reasons. But people will automatically blame those who, for their own reason, have chosen not to vaccinate. Perhaps the person who passed on the measles to this woman was an illegal and had not been vaccinated. Perhaps the person who passed on the measles to this woman was vaccinated when young, and didn’t know that immunity from vaccines can and does wear off as we get older. The WHOLE story would be nice before everyone decides how this poor woman got measles and potentially places blame where it does not belong.

Unlikely. But even if that were the case, without a reservoir of unvaccinated people, with a 5% failure measles would soon die out. The resurgence of measles can only be tied to one cause - the refusal of people to vaccinate their children.

How is Obama screening the illegals pouring over the border for diseases like measles? Oh, he’s not. Then why do fundamentalists who don’t believe in vaccinations always get the wrap when these diseases crop up?

Net, an equal percentage of idiots, right?

I don’t wish that on my neighbors. But I also don’t like putting poison in my body or my kids’ bodies, either. And I like having the freedom to make that call.

False. There will always be a case here or a case there. Also there have been outbreaks in highly vaccinated communities, which is why Merk is being investigated for fudging the efficacy numbers of the MMR vaccine. The gov’t gave them sole license for MMR vax manufacture as long as they could keep the efficacy rate above 95%. They’ve been accused of lying about being able to meet those numbers, that the actual rates are much lower. Interested to see how these cases turn out.

And when there is a chance of adverse outcome from vaccines, no matter how small it is (and there is one, says so right on the documentation that comes with the vaccine), you should be able to make the choice of whether you want the vaccine or not.

Cool your jets. There are those of us who lived through measle epidemics. The vaccine is a good thing.

Deafness, blindness, and yes even death are not minor inconveniences

As someone put it, if you refuse vaccinations due to fear of what they might do to you, you should refuse all medical interventions and treatments, because vaccinations have lower rates of side effects and bad outcomes than any other medical procedure.

I know a woman who is unable to be vaccinated due to a medical condition, and she prays that other people will get their shots so that she won’t be exposed. This is a public health issue. If people don’t want to be vaccinated, then let them move to some island somewhere so they don’t put innocent children and others at risk.

Then become a hermit. Otherwise you are putting other people at risk.

If you are concerned about the miniscule risk that vaccines might pose (and all the fear-mongering about mercury, autism, etc. is bogus) then you must not subject yourself to any medical procedure. Vaccinations have a safer record than just about any other medical procedure. Even getting your teeth cleaned has risks.

And I have a choice as to whether I get my teeth cleaned, no one is forcing me to do it.

I’m not convinced one way or the other as to the safety of vaccines. Certainly they can, but not always, prevent one from catching a disease they’d rather not have. But they can also cause some severe problems, per the literature that the manufacturers include with the doses. Maybe some day they’ll be able to tell beforehand who will and who won’t have an adverse reaction. Until then I dont believe in forcing people to have a vaccine they don’t want. I have no problem with the recent California law, there is still the alternative of homeschooling for parents who choose not to vaccinate their children.

Should the 5%ish for whom the vaccine is uneffective be moved to an island as well? They are possible vectors of contagion.
