The North did not raise the idea of freeing the slaves until the war was half over.

True, the republicans had to keep demorat slave owners of the North appeased to fight southern demorats until they could emancipate them.

So should we tear down the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington monument?

I consider George Washington to be the greatest man in the history of the Country. He owned slaves. His most trusted confidant was one of them.

What is your opinion of George Washington? Should he be purged from the history books because he owned slaves?

Actually, the Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in states which were at war with the Union.

Go figure. Rules for thee and not for me.

The objective was to stir up a slave uprising against 'massah' and throw the South into chaos.

Didn't happen.

Considering it was the middle of the war, you'd think most of the able bodied men were off fighting, so it should have been pretty easy, were those in bondage so inclined.
