Roberts voted against it because he was able to. It was Kennedy's turn to bite the bullet. Wouldn't be surprised if Kennedy announces his retirement before Obama's term ends, giving them the opportunity to add another ultra-liberal justice and a 5-4 majority.

Lighten up on Roberts.

Roberts voted against gay marriage, which allowed Kennedy to write the decision.

Roberts voted with the majority on ObamaCare so he, as Chief Justice Roberts, would get to write the decision so as to give the narrowest reading possible.

Roberts was obviously unwilling to lose his soul for voting for Gay Marriage, even if it did allow Justice Kennedy to write one of the most over reaching legal decisions in Supreme Court history.

If Roberts had not written the ObamaCare ruling, Kennedy would have written it and the decision would have been 100 times worse than the Roberts decision was.
