> “. The disciples, possessing weapons, said, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? (Luke 22:49)”
There’s more to this. Jesus himself ordered his disciples to obtain and bring the swords. Why?
The ‘why’ is a mystery.
Here’s what I think; here’s how I explain it to myself:
Fact: Jesus foresaw that He would be arrested, tried and crucified.
Conjecture: Jesus foresaw that His disciples could also be arrested, tried and crucified.
Belief: Without his disciples to carry on after He was crucified, resurrected and ascended, the Scriptures would not be fulfilled, the Church would not exist and Salvation would be lost. The survival of the disciples was essential.
Conjecture: Jesus ordered his disciples to purchase and bring the weapons so that the Temple Guards would back down and his disciples would be left alone to escape.
John 18
8 Jesus answered, I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go. 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: I have not lost one of those you gave me.
Belief: Jesus ordered weapons in self-defense for carrying out God’s will. I use this belief to back up my support of the 2nd Amendment. I still believe the US Constitution was divinely inspired and guided.
John 19:10-11
“Why don't you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don't you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?”
Then Jesus said,
“You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
In addition it is assumed that prior to this time Jesus and his disciples did not need to be worried about robbers because of their notoriety. After Jesus was arrested an unarmed disciple would be a target. Carrying a weapon would ward off potential attackers.
