So Massachusetts made a license mandatory in 1639 to prevent the Puritans from marrying black people and to require blood for the lab tests?

I don’t think so.

Is there a federal law requiring states to offer marriage licenses? If not a state should be able to just stop issuing them forcing people who want to get one to go out of state to another state offering them, have a religious ceremony or apply to the federal government for a license.

The federal government wants to rule over marriages? Let them.

It would be the same if abortion were a state issue wouldn’t it? You’d have to go to another state to have an abortion.

As others have said issuing licenses is a relatively new thing. If you have done any geneaology you know that if you go back a bit you have to go through church records to find marriage documentation.

Very interesting info. I’m learning a lot lately about the history of marriage.

When I did Canadian family research marriages were found in church records. I don’t recall seeing any civil records. When researching German immigrants in the 1800’s I also found the marriages in church records. I’d have to go back through my research. They may have also been registered with the state or county.

I do recall when I was married we had to obtain a license to present to the church official who conducted the ceremony.

I wonder how this could affect the death tax?

If two people of the same sex can get a “fairy-marriage” and one of them kicks the bucket, then the other is treated as a traditional widow/widower ?

So does this mean that an unrelated nurse or related caretaker and a patient can get one of these newfangled licenses and be “married” even though there’s no sexual relationship, and the caretaker end up inheriting the house and such?

I disagree. The FAMILY is our most fundamental and important civic, governmental and economic institution. Marriage is an important mechanism to support and grow the family.

The anti's know they must continue to tear at the fabric of family in order to make government the "mother."

Why would they be able to do this? The supreme court just ruled that everyone has a right to be married. So if the state doesn’t issue a license how are they supposed to exercise that right so the state can sanction it

The State has no business sanctioning a marriage. Holy Matrimony is under the purview of a Church. The state has no business getting involved in marriage.

Gay’s could always get married, nothing was stopping them. What they really wanted was the benefits handed out by the government for married people - and there are some.

Who told you that was the law in America, that the mosque, gay church, satanic cult, and Hindus, and Mormons decide what is a legal marriage, and then imposes it on the government and the rest of us?

All I’m saying is the ‘State has no business sanctioning a marriage.’ I’m not saying anything about US marriage law dictated by churches.

Yes you are, you want the Muslims, and any and all religions to tell American law, and America, whether a marriage is legal or not.

You want to overturn American law and tradition, and create something that would be a nightmare.

By the way, not that you can get these laws passed by the American voters, to end legal marriage in America.
