No, but after Appomattox THE flag was supposed to be a symbol not of defiance but of honor. We furled it with honor, and cased it up, proud of it yet for us the War was over—the Union had prevailed and we were once more part of it. THAT Flag will always live on as a remembrance of those who fell carrying it.

Listen and learn. Some chose to fight on, but General Lee asked us to bear defeat with head held high and rebuild our part of the Union—not to defy but to work together. For the next 75 years THE flag was used in those honorable remembrances of those veterans and fallen of the Southern states—not as a symbol of defiance. Certain members of the KLAN unfurled and carried it; bringing great dishonor to it and themselves, but that was only a few of those who did. Ever see a Klan rally—mostly USA Flags. That tarnished Old Glory, too.

Those who used the Confederate Battle Flag in the 50s and 60s to defy negro sufferage did the tarnishing of that Noble Banner. It has been perverted into a symbol of racism and hatred, and I wish was not so.

Better to furl it up again and let this generation pass before we ever wave it in defiance again. Moreover, we have conservative comrades and brothers in arms all over the Union; why should our symbol of defiance be one that their ancestors fought against? Cannot we have a symbol that represents us all, and not one the democrats used in hatred?
