This story broke some time ago, but its nevertheless worth flagging.
Unconscionably, vermin — and pests — reportedly invaded the kitchen of a Florida Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital. The Tampa Bay Times reports:
Workers at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center reported "3 large dead rats that fell through the kitchen ceiling" at the hospital during renovation work Wednesday night, according to emails obtained by the Tampa Bay Times.
They then sent color photos of the rats to the facility's infection prevention coordinator, Miriam Ruisz, and also told her about a cockroach infestation, emails show.
I almost gagged reading that. Sadly, however, these shocking news stories are all too common these days. After all, remember when ex-Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki was forced out of his cabinet post last year after an investigative report found that dozens of veterans died of neglect and malfeasance at a Phoenix hospital? But the problems only seemed to unravel after that: We later learned that tens of thousands of patients were waiting endlessly to see a doctor as hospitals all over the country systematically — and knowingly — worked overtime to cover up their record of failure. And despite generous subsidies from Washington, we learned days ago that wait times have all but increased.
Over the past decade, more than 1,000 veterans may have died as a result of VA malfeasance, former Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) concluded in an oversight study investigation published in 2014. That statistic, my friends, should concern every single American, not just veterans and their families.
Floridas senior Senator responded to the Times' bombshell:
I mean this is ridiculous," said Senator Nelson.
And heres Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL):
Rubio said he was "alarmed" by a recent Tampa Bay Times report that revealed how three dead rats fell through the ceiling of the hospital's kitchen last week during work to install new fire sprinklers. Internal hospital emails from the facility's infection chief also said the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital has a cockroach infestation.
"Improved conditions at" Haley "are critical for veterans in the Tampa Bay area," Rubio wrote in a letter to Haley interim director Sallie Houser-Hanfelder.
And everywhere else as well. Providing clean and safe hospitals is the very least Uncle Sam can do.
The rats come home to roost.
What a stinking, lousy, vermin infested central socialist government!
Perhaps America doesn’t deserve better than this garbage heap some call a government or, on the other hand, perhaps it is a clarion call to arms against a monstrous evil.
Yes, but they needed money to buy those colored lights for the White House.
Cockroaches.
Hasn’t the UN classified them as a ‘food’?
If nothing is done to punish VA officials who used fraud to get bonuses, it is no surprise that nothing will be done to clean up this filth.
Uh, on second thought, I’ll just have the pudding.
The V.A. should never have been created. Veterans should receive a check with which they can buy insurance and/or medical services, which should be 100% private. (Of course, Obamacare should be abolished, along with all federal involvement in health care/medicine.)
Anyone in the pest control industry can tell blood curdling stories about large commercial kitchens.
The problem is not the VA, the problem, as always, is the corrupt people put into management positions.
My VA clinic and hospital are A-1, great people, great service.
The cataract surgery I underwent was top-notch, from the cafeteria food to the nurses and surgeons.
Also, Arthur, the VA is not only about healthcare, it's is a way for veterans to obtain their first home at a reasonable rate so they can become part of the American dream.
And VA educational benefits, although reduced since I was in the 60's-70's help these same veterans find and pursue a career path after honorable service.
On the other hand, obamascare is an entirely different animal.
It is purposely set up not as a healthcare system, but as a means of control of the sheeple.
The VA healthcare system isn't perfect by any means, but at least it's a reasonable example of how government treats some of it's citizens.
Gag me with a spoon.

Veterans are dangerous and mostly white, and the contractual obligation to provide healthcare for them eats into monies that should be spent transporting illegal aliens to “seed communities” in swing districts throughout the country. You can’t “Fundamentally Transform” the US by wasting money on those who gave their lives and service to maintaining “freedom”.
The food leavings they fed on were so bad they killed the rats? Or was poison put out to kill off the infestation?
The problem with places like that is the government employee. Since he doesn’t have to encourage customers to buy his services, he generally couldn’t give a sh*t. Obviously, that does not apply to ALL .gov types. So any .gov FReepers, don’t try to force the non-fitting shoe on.
No I think the point is that it was invested with rats and cockroaches
Excellent point. Like with anything else it depends on the management of a particular facility. You can not dump it all in one pot
Roaches aren't mentioned
Good way to damage the military is to demoralize them in ways such as this.
Who would enlist now?
I need to check out.
But government rushes 29M to give to nine shooting victims.
You sound just like those people who know that government schools are a vast boondoggle, a playground of corruption, indoctrination centers run by Reds, except that OUR government school is just great, a thriving community center, our kids just love it, etc.
There is no reason for the V.A. to be running hospitals. Vets should get money, as part of their compensation, and get their health care from the private sector. (There shouldn’t BE any other kind of health care.)
And don't be so pompous as to tell we Vets what's best for us.
