An appeal to heaven with an Ashera tree I cannot fly.

I hear ya and understand where you're coming from. Yet, George Washington was not a worshiper of the Ashera Pole or the Ashera Tree...he was a Christian worshiping the same Almighty God as did the historical Jews. GW flew the flag and it was plainly visible in the distance.

It's a flag expressing dependence on the One and Only Almighty God in time of great need... but not an appeal to Ishtar.

But, I know how some FReepers here feel about displaying Christmas trees. I won't argue the point.
