They are called “corkers” in Air Force lingo. Somebody else will have to explain what that means. I think it has to do with the composites in the body of the aircraft when it burns and expels some sort of residue

This might partially explain the hazmat precautions at the crash site.
IIRC, the F-16 is equipped with a small tank containing hydrazine - a hazardous chemical/fuel. The hydrazine is used to power an EPU (emergency power unit).
