Republicans push back against proposed dietary guidelines

Congressional Republicans are pushing back against proposed dietary guidelines that urge Americans to consider the environment when deciding what foods to eat.

House and Senate spending bills say the guidelines must focus only on nutrition and diet. That’s a clear effort to thwart a recommendation by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee that eating a diet higher in vegetables and other plant-based foods is better for the environment than eating a diet based more on foods from animals.

The advice from a government advisory panel of independent doctors and nutrition experts has raised the ire of the meat industry.

The dietary guidelines come out every five years, and the government advice informs everything from school lunches and food package labels to advice from your doctor. The departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services are expected to issue a final version by year’s end based on the advisory committee’s February recommendations. …

Whatever the fda says, I’m going to do the exact opposite. They have a 100% track record of failure.

Humans were designed with tearing teeth (the front teeth) and grinding teeth (the back ones). Humans were designed to eat both meat and vegetables. These people go against nature all the time!

...that eating a diet higher in vegetables and other plant-based foods is better for the environment than eating a diet based more on foods from animals.

I seriously doubt that. That is one of those memes that militant vegetarians have been repeating for decades, but no one ever produces evidence to support it. Animals eat plants that are inedible to humans, and convert them to food. If we were to switch the portion of calories and protein that we now get from animals to plant sources instead, a lot more land would have to be cultivated--and that has an environmental impact.

Also, so-called "organic" farming is not very environmentally friendly. The high rate of crop loss using "organic" methods means that more land must be cultivated to produce the same amount of food that can be grown using non-"organic" methods.

The more land that is cultivated, the less wild plant growth there is to support wildlife.

They’ll push back at this, but they won’t push back on the TRADE DEAL??? I only hate Republicans a little less than I hate Democrats!

Great. Dietary guidelines. A real winner. Put this in the next fundraiser email and it will rally the faithful to send you money. At least from all the food companies that, along with the other Chamber of Commerce types, pull the strings in the modern Republican Party.

If they’re as successful as their so called pushbacks against Bonehead Boehner then they should SHUT UP and eat their peas.

A diet of pure dirt would be the ultimate environmentally responsible diet, and as far as I’m concerned, any environmentalist propounding the notion of diets based on environmental considerations is a hypocrite if they’re consuming anything more nutritional than that.

So now they want to push back.

Probably being paid generously by some processed food company.
