Debate over rebel flag widens to include all symbols of Confederacy

The debate over the rebel flag that began anew after last week's church shootings in Charleston, S.C., has morphed into a full-blown Confederate controversy.

While Stars and Bars have long been associated by many with slavery, the latest campaign to remove Confederate emblems has extended beyond the flag to statues, memorials, parks and even school mascots. Never has the debate over what symbolizes heritage and what stands for hate covered so much ground, as efforts to strip icons that have been part of the visual and cultural landscape of the South for decades are afoot at national, state and local levels.

In one Arkansas town, the school board voted unanimously Tuesday to ban the song "Dixie" for the next school year and phase out “Rebel,” the school’s mascot.

“It came to our attention that the public has been pretty upset about the Confederate flag, which has already been removed, the rebel mascot [and] the playing of the ‘Dixie,’” Fort Smith, Ark., school board member Susan McFerran told reporters after the board voted for the changes.

Mount Rushmore. No, I’m not kidding.

It could be Mount Rushmore, it could be anything. The point is, they will not stop. Central, I don't think they have over played their hand, until someone stops them. I don't see any evidence, that anyone intends to stop them.

Stone Mountain is owned by the State of Georgia, so it is not implausible at all for the politicians to order that it be closed/destroyed or converted into a temple to worship the remade Obama Amerika.

Maybe they will turn it into a mosque, for the muzzie in chief. 😡

I think they are pushing to far, there will be a revolt. I live near Richmond if they start bulldozing Mt. Ave there will be bloodshed. This is an attempt to get the crackers to start shooting so they can have an excuse to finish Reconstruction. See the original Reconstruction I didn't really work. See my tagline.

It will be interesting to see if they go after the Memorial to the Women of the Confederacy that stands in the center of the walk on the South side of the Mississippi Capitol building. It is 4 sided approx 7’ on each side and approx 7’ high, the 4 sides memorialize and honor, the Mothers, the Wives, the Sisters and the Daughters.

After the Civil War ended, I believe ABRAHAM LINCOLN asked the band to play DIXIE.

If it was good enough for Lincoln it is good enough for this school.

“That means Ole Miss will lose the Rebels name and the mascot of the southern gentlemen looks like Col sanders will be gone.”

Colonel Reb has been gone and replaced by a Black Bear that no one wants. Can’t display the flag in the stadium any more either.

You need to adjust your nomenclature.

People within the civil rights movement of half a century ago label the Second Reconstruction as having begun under Lyndon Johnson in 1964-65. Instead of sending the US Army in uniform to the South as the First Reconstruction did, the Second Reconstruction saw the federal entity send lawyers from the Justice Department and FBI agents in business suits. The Second Reconstruction was so successful that it led to the election of a liberal Southern Democrat as president in 1976. Most of the Second Reconstruction ended with Reagan, but bits and pieces of it still survive in the federal court system.

What we are witnessing now is the beginning of the Third Reconstruction.

Yes

The guy that played Red legs Terrell (Bill McKinney) had to be a good actor, to be successful at being such a dork, but I guess he was in other Clint Eastwood movies too.

Suppose every Confederate flag were gone tomorrow.....every single one. Would that mean that all racism has disappeared?

For the life of me, I can’t see what good *disappearing* the Confed flag will do. Let’s not display the flag. Let’s just display the left’s ignorance.

Freedoms are being eroded at quantum speeds. Hopefully there are enough of us with the guts to stand firm and fire when we see the whites of their eyes if needed

If there were they would have acted already.

I guess the University of Alabama better look out. Located on the Campus is a beautiful Tiffany Stained Glass window which was commissioned by the Alabama Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1925. It commemorates the role of the University students during the Civil War. During the War, the U of A was known as the “West Point of the Confederacy”, which is why most of the campus was burned in 1865 by Union troops.

I hope the PC hyenas don’t find out about the window; that would give them some other memorial to try to destroy. It’s really beautiful. I will attempt to post a link to a photo of it. Sorry, I’m new at this.

That is nuts! It has been many years since I have been to Misissippi, but a black bear as a mascot. Up here in the UP of MI, black bears are native, as well as Moose, Deer, Skunk, Fox, Wolves, and Coyotes. Too many years have gone by since being in Mississippi!
