How could the Cardinals have voted for this leftist moron to be Pope?
By caving into pressure to do what was popular rather than that which was morally correct . . .
My guess is that the Cardinals are by and large leftists. They wanted this clown Pope because they knew he could be controlled. Further I bet that Ratzinger retired because these same Cardinals made life hell when he would not drive the church as they wanted.
God did not elect this Pope. Do they make the votes public ?
