A record 21.7 million American kids get free or reduced-price lunch during at school. But when summer vacation starts, the vast majority of them go without this essential, federally funded benefit. Fewer than 4 million kids -- or just 18% of those in the school lunch program -- are fed through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's summer food program. While that's a record number for the 40-year-old initiative, many advocates and government officials say more needs to be done. "In the summer, when those school meals disappear, children find themselves hungry and with few options," said Duke Storen, a senior director at Share Our Strength, which aims to end child hunger. "It impacts their health and well-being and contributes to learning loss."

how can so many poor kids be both obese and hungry?
And if they are hungry, what is wrong with people that they would let their kids go hungry? I would expect a parent to go hungry before the child.
Lastly, with all the handouts the poor get, I do not see how they can squander all the largesse that they take, and not have enough to feed their family.
Maybe we should rethink the food stamp program if children need the government to feed them year round.
Where are these kids parents? If the parents aren’t feeding their kids isn’t that abuse?

What are the requirements for getting the free school food???
My understanding is that a lot of these meals given out are to kids that really don’t need the free food. it ‘s their parents who are taking advantage of lax requirements.
These kids are fed at home during the summer.
Because maybe those parents are trading their food stamps And ebt credit cards for drugs

Since we have 47 million on SNAP it is only logical to add 30 million more. It’s the progressive way.

It’s a foreign concept to me - we went without a lot of ‘stuff’ to make sure the boys had food, clothing, and shelter.
I guess parents now just gotta have the stuff. At least, that’s what I’m being told...

Yes, and I see the fat kids on the street after school is out. I know, they aren’t eating M.O’s healthy meals so they are fat.
We give the parents more than enough money to feed their kids, but the kids go hungry.
How about an angry article encouraging the government to crack down on deadbeat parents?
If there are food centers where the kids go to eat, do they place their game thingies in a basket so that they won’t play them while eating? Obama phones, too?
When I was a kid; I got into my piggy bank & walked up to the little store & bought myself a can of Vienna sausage & a cold drink, & maybe some cookies or candy. Cheap eating & I didn’t go hungry. Momma worked; so did Daddy. They knew I wasn’t so dumb I couldn’t rob my piggy bank & get something to eat. Balanced it probably wasn’t; but the hungry hole in my stomach was filled.
Why do we allow these kids to stay with parents that neglect them?
