Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced Monday he has advanced cancer and is starting aggressive chemotherapy.
The 59-year-old governor, who took office in January, said that while the disease is in a "very advanced" stage, he has a "very strong chance of success" of survival and even "beating" it. He intends to continue serving as governor while undergoing treatment.
"It's a tough time to go through and I'm going to miss a few meetings, but I'll have full capacity to make decisions," Hogan said. "I'll still be working most of the time."
Hogan said he has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma that has spread throughout 20 to 30 percent of his body. He will undergo aggressive chemotherapy for about 18 weeks. The cancer was diagnosed after Hogan found a lump on his throat while shaving, he said.
Hogan had been feeling ill since returning from a trip to Asia two weeks ago, canceling multiple appearances and events last week, according to news reports.

Johns Hopkins is pretty good, but it’s no M.D. Anderson.

Very bad news. My best friend was similarly diagnosed and despite treatment died. Maybe the governor will have better luck, plus newer treatments to take advantage of.

No, Hopkins is merely the No. 1 or 2 hospital in the country for the past 3 decades.

Johns Hopkins was ranked #5 last year. M.D. Anderson was #2. M.D. Anderson is consistently ranked #1 or #2.

“aggressive” cancer I’m going to say is a fast growing cancer....IIRC, fast growing cancers are usually more susceptible to chemo/radiation...

Anderson is especially known for cancer treatment, Hopkins is all-around one of the best hospitals in the nation. Including for cancer treatment. Calling Hopkins “pretty good” is a bit like calling Michaelangelo “an adequate house painter.”
These are both world-class institutions. Neither fall into that category labeled “pretty good.” Anne Arundel Medical Center is “pretty good.” On a good day, that is.University of Maryland Baltimore is “pretty good.”

UofM is more than just pretty good. It is consistently one of the tops and also a great innovator.

My sister had very rare breast cancer diagnosed at StIII, but continued to be her A self until the last few months out of the 3 years she fought. Only somewhat did the chemo treatments drag her down for a few days, then she was up and at ‘em.
A shame, whether or not you agree with policy it’s terrible for someone and their family to go through this. Wishes and prayers for him and his close ones. :(

Actually, I was being polite. I'm not impressed. They couldn't diagnose my son after months of repeated appointments. In one visit to Hopkins, they found his tumor. I don't really know what would have happened to my son if we'd have continued at Maryland.
