The federal government IS supreme in its sphere. That’s what the Supremacy Clause means. And in fact Americans have all sorts of rights, most of which come out of the US constitution. You would know how lucky we are if you studied history or traveled abroad. You assume that State government will be milder than the national government. Note that in the name of “states’ rights” the South enslaved millions of people and for many years denied the descendants of those people basic human rights. Both evils had to be addressed by the national government.
