Over the decades the Democratic-Republicans changed their name to the Democratis Party. For short, they used to be called Republicans (early 19th century). Party shifts came with political realignments. Many of our values, decentralized government especially, were held by those Democrats, the Democrats of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson. The Federalists were for a stronger central government, and in particular a central bank. Much of their platform became obsolete as the country matured, and they were replaced by the Whigs, who were in turn replaced by the Republicans.
