A third, much faster coronal mass ejection (CME) is expected to catch up with the two observed on 18 and 19 June bringing them all to Earth in close succession by the UTC day of 22 June 2015. The CME was associated with an R1-Minor flare event observed at 0142 UTC (9:21 pm ET) from Sunspot Region 12371 located near center disk. A G3-Strong Geomagnetic Storm Watch has been issued for 22 June as well as a G2-Moderate Watch for 23 June as the CMEs make their way past Earth. These Watches supersede all prior forecasts. Stay tuned to the website to see how the activity unfolds!

The one reported this morning was a full halo CME, not just a glancing blow. Our reduced magnetic field is making M class flares as effective as X class with a better magnetic field.

Anyone else seeing what looks like northern lights in Seattle now?
Just curious, cause I see some light high up - it could be clouds illuminated from the ground, but you don’t see lights through the clouds!
Also, it’s not north - it’s like overhead and a bit to the south.

And if you look at the sun, you will see smack dab in the middle AR2371, one of the largest sunspot groups of this cycle...

You are added you lucky devil.
And for those of you asking how the ping list works when the internet goes dark:

Finally, a ping that would actually be helpful! I’ve often thought of doing the same myself, after all, if the Internet goes down, everyone SHOULD be informed. And a ping certainly would be the most efficient means of such communication. I just don’t have the time, what with daily showers and such.
So, I’d like to be on this list, just to occasionally get a ping with Yul Brynner boldly stating “So let it be written, so let it be done” (I always loved that line from the 10 Commandments).
(You have to keep using that picture and line, in other words, or else I’m off).
Thanks,

"...zeiss prism range finder."
Thanks. I was unaware of that and will look it up. I used magnetic compasses to do land navigation, teach it to soldiers, and more recently along with other simple tools, to check property lines. Been learning more about the stars and informally teaching some young folks (the North Star and more).
