I don’t think you understand what the term means, frankly. I buy stuff. The imported stuff I buy adds to our “trade imbalance.” So what?
That is NOT the only reason. Main reason for our trade deficits with 90% of countries is, they restrict import of American products via various tricks and restrictions and tariffs.
Our professional politicians have been obviously inept in helping export of American products for last 6 decades.
