On June 20 former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney called for South Carolina to remove the Confederate flag from their state Capitol grounds in Columbia.
His call comes in the wake of the heinous attack on Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. It follows a photo of the suspected gunman, Dylann Roof, in which Roof is seen leaning against his car with a Confederate flag license plate visible on the front of his vehicle being widely circulated.
Here were Romney’s exact words: “Take down the Confederate Flag at the SC Capitol. To many, it is a symbol of racial hatred. Remove it now to honor Charleston victims.”

I don’t think Romney had ANY Supporters in the Primaries at Free Republic. I don’t recall seeing a one.

I am one of many FReeper’s who supported Romney in the Primary to rid our Nation of the Marxist Usurper. After enduring the first Term (reign of Terror) of Obama, I would have probably Voted for most any Republican in the General.

Many southern states folded quickly with out a vote.
Mississippi did not have the same knee jerk reaction.
Held a state wide vote and guess what? Citizens voted to keep the flag
by a large margin.
That is how you do it. Fair and honestly.
Mitt has no reason to leace the stage. He got tens of millions of people to support every last thing he stood for with their vote.
Those that voted for him should just stop rationalizing their mistake. Fortunately many have admitted their mistake and do not need to rationalize like linberals every time Romney threads appear. None of the rest of us buy the excuses. All it does is encourage the Jeb sheep to have their own excuses to abandon conservatism again.
Mitt was not better than Barry. His record proved it and his actions since intentionally losing seal the deal. If people want conservatism they need to take their heads out of their fear and vote for it. It isn’t a unicorn that appears to save us.

There were many, nasty, liberal, and many, it was the most vicious battles I have ever seen here, they pushed Romney for two election cycles, 2008 and 2012, and some for 2016.

I live in downtown Columbia. The Confederate battle flag flies directly behind the Confederate Soldier memorial obelisk. It is far more conspicuous since 2000 than it was high up & far away over the State House dome, so be careful what you wish for. Then if you don’t get what you want, move the goal posts & change the rules & make more demands just like the NAACP does.
In 208 because of the NAACP `boycott’, the Obama campaign stayed in private homes instead of hotels (that really showed those racist capitalist pigs!). It’ll be fun to watch when Hillary shows up on someone’s doorstep with her retinue of hundreds. Oh - I forgot: total news blackout enforced by the Secret Service with Hillary arriving & departing in the dead of night.
FWIW I’m not pro-Confederate, but that flag salutes the bravery of tens of thousands of Southerners who perished in their cause, and it should stay.
Here’s a new version of an old saying: “You can judge a flag by the quality of its enemies.”
