There’s always been a segment of the population that begins exhibiting paranoid schizophrenia around age 30, but there has been a VERY sharp uptick in violence since the 80’s, and with much younger people. It’s got to be the pharmaceuticals.

With many of these cases where the shootings are done by isolated young men, it's the combination of legal mind-altering poisons and near total immersion into the fantasy world created by technology. They're men-children who have never learned to distinguish fantasy from reality, since the most meaningful interactions in their lives are virtual.

Not everyone who suffers the violent tendencies from these poisons fits into that category. I would wager that the number of suicides that occurred because people shot themselves instead of someone else when affected by these poisons is another issue that's not being discussed.

Methamphetamine.
It makes users paranoid even if they only take it a few times.

Take a good look at the drugs they have kids on, most of them say suicidal tendency. We can no longer commit such people to mental wards. I’ve got a brother who belongs in one for alcoholism who will never give it up on his own. And no 30 program is going to fix that, he is not capable of caring for himself ever.

Perhaps another answer is to change the drugs used.

SSRI drugs inhibit the re-uptake of Serotonin which increases the level of Serotonin in the brain and makes one feel better. However, SSRI’s have horrible side effects, especially when they are stopped suddenly. The drug companies make lots of money off them.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) increases the level of Serotonin in the body and has much fewer side effects. 5-HTP is a supplement and the drug companies cannot make much money off it. Coincidentally, the drug companies produce a lot of research to try to show that Serotonin from 5-HTP cannot cross the blood - brain barrier and therefore, it is ineffective. Our family experience says that is not so. Here is some supporting information: http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/supplement/5hydroxytryptophan-5htp
