Police are searching for a gunman who opened fire Wednesday night at a historic African American church in downtown Charleston, S.C. Charleston officials said nine people were killed and others were injured.
I do believe this is a hate crime, Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said at a late night news conference, without explaining the basis for his conclusion.
Police said the victims had gathered Wednesday night in the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston for a prayer meeting when the shooting occurred. Police are now searching for the suspect, described as a clean-shaven white male in his early 20s, who has sandy blond hair and a small build. Police said he was wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and Timberland boots. He is believe to be the only shooter.

They haven’t caught the guy, so how can they call it a hate crime?
Indeed. In most cases of mass shootings like this, the perp continues until killed or saves the last bullet for themselves. This guy simply left and apparently has disappeared. A cynical person might imagine this was done to fuel retaliatory responses against mass groups of white people by blacks to fuel a race war. Or maybe the guy was just a wack job.
Damn, that skinny little punk killed 9 people?
SC is a shall issue CCW state.
No one was carrying to defend themselves and the congregation?
Really a shame evil people can run rampant like that.
Sounds as if the police already know who they are looking for. I’m sure the shooter did not shout out...”Hi! I’m 21 years old!” before he started shooting.
