The “super PAC” supporting Jeb Bush, now walled off from the candidate because of campaign finance rules, hopes to “weaponize” its fund-raising total for the first six months of the year, the group’s top strategist told donors on a conference call on Wednesday afternoon.
The comment from Mike Murphy, a veteran adviser to Mr. Bush who is now running the super PAC that will back the campaign, came as the group is focused on raising as much money as possible in the final days of its first fund-raising period, contributing to what is expected to be a significant financial edge over the rest of the Republican field.
Mr. Bush has described that financial edge as a significant factor when dealing with donors in the past, telling a gathering of supporters in Miami weeks ago that he had already raised more money than any other Republican presidential candidate in modern history.
Mr. Bush only just formed an official campaign committee, which is limited to accepting checks in maximum increments of $2,700. But the super PAC, which can raise higher amounts, has been aggressively fund-raising since the beginning of the year.
“We are very, very focused on the next two weeks,” Mr. Murphy told donors on the call, which one the participants allowed a reporter for The New York Times to listen in to.
Mr. Murphy described early polls as relatively meaningless, but predicted Mr. Bush would “see a lift” in the next week after a smooth campaign kickoff Monday in Miami.
