Fascism was all the rage in the 1930’s.
I believe the invention of the Derringer led to the first concealed weapon laws: in Alabama in the 1840’s, I think.
Western “law” wasn’t the law. The reason Western Sheriffs were so heavy handed in violating the US Constitution is because those towns were basically lawless. It was every man for himself. So those Sheriffs just made up law out of whole cloth and it was might vs. might — the might of the Sheriffs and judges vs. the might of the lawless elements in their towns.
For a long time there, there was no “law” west of the Mississippi except what the Sheriffs of the towns could enforce. And very often they were corrupt themselves.
Nahh, the Earps were just pissed that Ike Clanton had been claiming all night long that he was going to shoot on sight the first Earp he saw.
1920s here in Michigan.
A black man (Ossian Sweet) defended himself against a Detroit mob trying to drive him out of “their” neighborhood. He killed one and was acquitted of murder.
It was only a matter of weeks before legislation started showing up in Lansing calling for standards of who can own a gun. It resulted in the first gun boards which pretty much always denied blacks.
A tag shouldn’t be needed discussing an obviously fictional movie. It should be common knowledge. There are always some who will be out of the loop, but he didn’t need a tag for what most everyone should know is fictional and is easy to verify on a quick internet search.

There was also some efforts at “knife control” due to the carnage of the “Sand Bar Duel/Fight” where Jim Bowie used his knife to great effect. Mostly, like gun control, all it did was make people want Bowie knives.
Weren’t there a number of gun control laws passed in the Reconstruction era in the South which aimed to disarm blacks? Can’t think of anything before that, offhand.

I thought gun control started with the British. I thought they tried to disarm the colonists, and the colonists said molon labe.
The reason for gun control in the old West was the same as for now.
The idea was for those in power and with money to stay that way.
The cowboys came into town and the town wanted the cowboys money. The would get it by fair or foul means. Now if the cowboys were all armed, it made it much more difficult to steal from them or cheat them.
You forgot your sarcasm tab. The Clantons and McLaurys were rustler bandit types who brought their gangster ways into Tombstone. The Earps arrived and only wanted to make their fortunes and live in peace with their brothers and wives.
The Cowboys (new term for cow pokes and/or cow rustlers) took umbrage with the Earps' quick financial success and political support. They thought they owned the town. Virgil and Wyatt Earp's reputations of being no-nonsense lawmen is just what the town was looking for to become more civilized. From there the feud built and we know the result.
The Mayor and not Virgil Earp (like in the movie) instituted the No Guns Within Town Limits ordinance. Now think how small that town was and how the Cowboys ran rough-shed over the town before the Earps' arrival.
Interestingly, while many small frontier towns needed such restrictions within town limits, I now promote open carry in Detroit, Chicago, Philly, St. Louis, DC et al. Sounds hypocritical, but compare and contrast.
I would say with the Earp brothers in the 1870’s. The reason for the “shoot out at OK Corral” was the failure of the loses to surrender firearms upon entering town.
That would be Virgil Earp, the Marshal of Tombstone. Wyatt was his deputy as was brother Morgan. See my post above regarding the need for gun-control in frontier outlaw towns.

People forget that a lot of their western examples, are examples from frontier territories, which involves different levels of law, and obedience to law, and adherence to the constitution.
