BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A war of words plays out between Baltimore’s mayor and the union that represents city police. The union wants to know–did Stephanie Rawlings-Blake order police to stand down during violent riots that injured more than 100 officers.

Christie Ileto with the tense exchange.

Keeping the peace in Baltimore has been a struggle since April 27–both on the streets and now among city leaders–where a very public dispute is brewing between police brass, the union and the mayor.

No one was prepared when tensions boiling exploded at Mondawmin Mall before sweeping the city.

“They should have had all of the officers with the proper equipment on,” one officer said.

Two active city cops tell CNN they were ill-equipped and told to not engage. The police union wants explanations, tweeting Tuesday night a letter, saying it’s moving forward with an “after action report.”

“The release will resolve questions about what was ordered, in fact, what was not ordered,” said FOP President Lt. Gene Ryan.

At the heart of the discord is was there an order for police to stand down. The mayor responding in a Twitter frenzy, saying the truth will come out before calling the police union letter full of allegations that are not helping heal the city.

“I never gave an order to stand down,” said Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts.

Even Commissioner Batts denies giving such an order.

Councilman Carl Stokes says it’s not the most pressing issue, like the surging crime and the 135 homicides this year.

Ileto: “How does this war of words that’s playing out in the public distract from the bigger issue?”

Stokes: “The back and forth that’s going on and the tweets between the mayor and the police department and the FOP and people are saying why are they fighting one another instead of fighting the criminals that are making our life really bad these days?”

Police have made reforms to training and purchased new equipment after 160 officers were injured during the riots.

“the criminals that are making our life really bad these days?”

Who clued this genius in on the fact that filing charges against the police is having that bad effect in this Democrat Utopia? Just get your Black mayor, district attorney, and police chief out in the street to ask those criminals to behave themselves…and don’t forget to say “please.”

The only tool in the liberal toolbox when it comes to dealing with any sticky situation is the lie.

... the tweets between the mayor and the police department and the FOP and people are saying why are they fighting one another instead of fighting the criminals that are making our life really bad these days?

Because by fighting the mayor they are fighting the leadership of the criminals that are making their life really bad?

Police need to be allocated based on population NOT on race. It’s time for cops babysitting the black community to end. The rest of us are tired of paying for the soap opera.

Actually, police need to be allocated based on need, not population. Andy and Barney are plenty for a whitebread town like Mayberry. You’d need a bigger ratio in a $h*+hole third world city like Baltimore.

The rioters needed space to destroy. Cops tend to get in the way of that.

Your theory is what's happening now...it's how policing done in large cities ... And it's not working. It's not working for the cops - and it's not working for the community. It's also NOT working for taxpayers.

Police are assuming the responsibilities of missing fathers, inept teachers, and strong ‘older brothers’. It's not healthy.

The ways police are distributed in cities today works in the short term but definitely fails in the long term.. And no, crime hasn't 'gone down' as much as people think - must of it is fudged statistics (for cities to stay 'job competitive').

A way to break toxic cycles is to switch incentives back to something healthy. And that does NOT include babysitting the black community.

Totally agree. It is not working because the libtard politicians overseeing the police departments want babysitting services, not police services.

When police try to provide police services, they are slapped down hard. So it is easier to collect a paycheck for babysitting services.

My theory applies only to police providing police services. Cops are still some of the nicest, most helpful and polite people in Japan (and in the U.S. before the 1970s) and they will even provide helpful babysitting type services. But do a crime and they are on you like white on rice instantly.
