‘Collective Panic’ Spreads Among Federal Employees Over OPM Hack
Breitbart.com ^ | 15 Jun 2015 | John Hayward

Posted on 06/16/2015 6:34:20 AM PDT by Rockitz

The first reports of the massive penetration of Office of Personnel Management files and security clearance applications — apparently by Chinese hackers most likely working for, or with, that country’s military intelligence apparatus — included grumbles from the affected employees that the administration didn’t handle the situation very well.

Those early grumbles were but the snap responses of a few individual employees the media chose at random. Now that the millions of people potentially affected by the hack have been given a few days to digest the news and consider the Administration’s response, their attitude has soured into what government employees described to BuzzFeed as “collective panic.”

It is interesting that the mainstream press has not exerted itself to collect a wide range of responses. Usually they’re all about the human-interest angle. Every news organization could easily talk to dozens, or hundreds, of federal employees and produce a piece like BuzzFeed’s, but they have not.

Tellingly, only former government employees jeopardized by the hack were willing to go on the record with BuzzFeed. Current employees insisted on remaining anonymous.

Federal employee's panic because someone has screwed up their day...

I'll try to feign sympathy.

Over the past decade....a lot of us who had clearances and did the stupid five-year updates and filled out the forms.

Yep the updates were a joke.

The good news is that I received an E-mail yesterday from OPM offering me one and half years of FREE credit protection!

For all I know it was the Chi-Coms making the offer.

TS/SBI/SCI/Limdis here.

From the late 70's.

IF they have stuff on me they extracted it from scanned microfiche.

Some of what I did would still be considered valuable intelligence.

I would not trust this admin to run a kool-ade stand, much less a sophisticated government.

After China bought up so much of our debt, I don’t think they had to hack us at all. They paid for access - apparently something the Clintons are famous for.

Some of my clearances are still supposedly classified! LOL One day in the back of a deuce and a half our section leader (O-3) mumbled a few code words for some reason. It wasn’t long before I outranked him.

I agree. If they were stupid enough to put NOC folks in the same DB with every other Fedzilla employee, the this guy’s assessment is true.

If, however, they were smart enough to make some of their operatives disappear electronically, then it isn’t.

Nothing at all wrong with paper files and filing cabinets.

A minor functionary has more control over your life than almost any business (Google, Facebook and a few others excepted).

But if they are the fifth estate, they are now also turning against the state. When their personal information and identities are not even safeguarded by basic precautions like encryption, not even afforded the protection of the TPP treaties, they know the regime doesn’t value them the way they thought they should be.

Well, at least we finally have an answer to the age old question: “Who will watch the watchers?”

This must be giving the more voyeuristic, surveillance-minded, overbearing, intrusive, and paranoid people in government the “screaming fantods”.

“You mean the Chinese are spying on *meeeee?* Keeping a dossier on *meeeee?* But they can’t *do* that!, they are violating my privacy! Everybody should have a right to privacy!”, completely forgetting the privacy of all the American people that they spied and kept dossiers on.

Unfortunately not just Federal Employees. Contractors are included too and I know some.

As far as the Federal Employees go of course Federal Employees gave it to Federal Employees in the butt. Just another failed administration policy. I bet there were plenty of ‘Political Officers’ in the ranks reporting on the troops behavior but without a positive impact on performance. The Communist System is alive and well.

As contractors, my company was told the only persons affected by this are current Government Civilians and Military. But I don’t think they can truthfully say this, myself. I don’t think they have a clue about how many times and what was accessed and taken.

First I heard of it and I'm retired military and civilian - got my fingers crossed and my jaws clenched....the last time there was a 'leak" all they did was offer to pay any fees for a credit check so we could see if anyone had compromised us and to put some "checks" on our credit.

Didn’t Obama say his soul duty is to protect the American people?

As a rule, he says the opposite of what he intends. The destruction of our country and our way of life is what gets him up in the morning.
