Navy ship christened for Giffords, wounded in 2011 shooting

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle "Gabby" Giffords of Arizona had a Navy vessel named in her honor during a ceremony at a Mobile, Alabama, shipyard Saturday afternoon.

Giffords joined others including Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, as the USS Gabrielle Giffords was christened in coastal Alabama. The 419-foot ship was built at the Austal shipyard and is the Navy's 10th littoral combat ship designed to operate in shallow waters near the coast.

Giffords was badly wounded in a 2011 shooting that left six dead and 13 injured in Tucson. The Democrat left Congress and later founded an organization that supports gun control.

"In congress I was proud to support our armed forces. I love the Navy - I even married a sailor," Giffords said as she kissed her husband Mark Kelly, a retired Navy captain and astronaut who stood by as she addressed the crowd. "Thank you to all who built this ship. She's stealthy; she will defend freedom around the world."

If her husband has an ounce of decency (since he’s her puppeteer), he would have insisted they name it after the judge or the little girl who died. I assume they have names, even though the media didn’t really bother to name them after the first day.

Its all about “poor Gabby”—the one who SURVIVED to become the new James Brady.

So we have a ship loaded with Guns named for a Gun Grabber.

They should have named a rowboat after her.

We have been at war since 2001. Tens of thousands maimed and killed. What did she do to deserve this more than others who were wounded in battle?

Not a surprise the ship is named for a gun control activist, they named a ship for the corrupt Murtha also.

Honestly, to me, that is enough. She was shot because she was serving her country. I might not agree with the exact form that service took, and I certainly don’t agree with all of the ideas she expressed in that, but to me that is the bottom line.

I don’t see any reason to name a ship after her - thousands of others have been shot in the service of their country who will never get anything like that level of acknowledgement, but in a world where there are crazy people who will go after a politician just because they are a politician, I do think there is some courage and honour in choosing that path if you do it because you want to make your country better (whether I agree with what you want to do or not).

Fully expecting and even welcoming any negative comments that come my way on this. But I think one massive problem in modern politics is a failure to respect everything about our opponents, just because we have real disagreements with them on some issues.
