If I took a statue of Rosie O’Donnell or Barbie, placed a scarf over her, and declared...”THIS IS MARY, the mother of GOD!”
SOME PEOPLE would fall down and venerate it.
Any wonder why the first Portuguese explorers who circumnavigated Africa went into a Hindu Temple and fell down before a statue (probably Shashthi) of a female deity with a small child and gave tanks to Mary for their success, in a HINDU TEMPLE!
Mary does deserve respect, but let’s not get carried away!

To the Pagan eye, what was the difference between their worship of their stone gods and Cortez’ veneration of his stone or plaster statue? To them it all looked the same.
