The SM-62A Snark has the distinct title of being the first operational U.S. intercontinental missile. The Snark was a ground-launched cruise missile developed in the late 1940s and 1950s. The United States Air Force established a require in 1945 for a cruise missile with a 8000 km range. By 1951, the first of only a few successful test launches occurred. Despite reliability and accuracy issues, the missile briefly became operational in 1960.
