USS South Carolina (BB-26) class battleship. Typical of the capital ships that participated in the Great White Fleet's tour.

That caught my eye too. Either Germany is planning to build another Bismarck and another Tirpitz, or this is yet another example of sloppy reporting.

Anyone with a Sopwith Camel can disable them.

I notice that the words “destroyer” and “battleship” are used rather loosely nowadays, and can refer to practically any surface combat ship.

The bow of the Kentucky was cut off and welded onto the bow of the Wisconsin after the Wisconsin had a collision that damaged its bow.

A battleship has an armored belt around the hull and armored decks. The defensive thickness of the armor is usually equal to the penetrating power of its own armament.

That Mascot is based after an Iowa Class Battleship

At least they didn't use a cruiser or aircraft carrier :-)

I find it curious that the Kentucky was still around to take pieces from in 1955... It had been canceled years earlier.

I grew up watching that show (the Americanized version, “Star Blazers”) and I loved it then.....and I still do. I discovered the original Japanese version thanks to a Japanese-American kid I went to school with, who had some of the original Japanese manga - he translated it into English for me.

One of my all-time faves.

What’s a design like that doing in outer space, anyway? A spaceship shouldn’t have an “up” like that ....

Exactly!

It was a Japanese cartoon for kids in the late 70s.

They did a live-action Yamato movie about five years ago. Not that good; they compressed the entire mission into about two hours. The visuals were really good tho, very similar to the Battlestar Galactica reboot.

Then they rebooted the Yamato anime series with a 26-episode run. This is available a few places online, free, but with subtitles. It is truly excellent from both a visuals and a plot/character development standpoint. While it still follows the original year-long mission to Iscandar plot, with many of the same points and devices, it’s very much it’s own creature and much superior to the original Yamato and the edited/Americanized Starblazers.

U-boats anyone? Time for the Germans to build a few nuclear powered subs, to keep the Chinese and Russkies at bey.

The Kentucky wasn’t cancelled per-se. Like Oriskany her completion was put on hold, with various upgrade schemes (command ship, missile ship) explored.

But nothing came of them. However, in addition to her bow going to the Wisconsin her engines were put into the Sacramento and Camden fast replenishment ships as well.
