I think it was Glenn Beck, during the 2010 midterms, that said that "taking offense" had become a growth industry in the USA.
I saw this on Facebook as a sidebar of “trending” news items (most of their trending news items deal with celebrities).
Clicking it takes you to a page with a number of articles from different web sources and then Facebooker comments below.
I clicked on the one for Jezebel (a feminist blog) and the posters didn’t disappoint (you can guess their statements before reading them), for example:
...A rich, white, cisgender, heterosexual, man wants to tell me what to get offended over. #America
...maybe the thing ruining comedy isn’t political correctness but insecure men who like to literally whip their penises out as a power play.
...Anyone who uses the term “PC” is usually trying to deflect responsibility for their bullsh!t comments. Also, they’re usually not funny.
...White privilege and ignorance...he’s rich and should enjoy just keeping quiet about race/sex issues that are clearly not affecting his personal life...
...Another white man who wants to set the discourse for what’s racist and what’s sexist.
...”Get off my lawn!” harrumphs old man.
...There’s no such thing as reverse racism. People can be bigoted, but if they don’t have power, they can’t be racists. Plus the term reverse racism implies that regular old racism is ok.
1000+ variations of liberal whine translating as “hey white guys, sit down and shut up!”
Ageism, classism, sexism, and racial bigotry are okay when they do it.
