Four years after the North took over, there was a nasty war between the Chinese and Vietnamese. China was trying to punish Russia for supporting the Vietnamese against the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.

It’s all the Frenchie’s fault.

We were in Vietnam because they kicked the snot out of the French, who then threatened nuclear war, so we went in to prevent that, and I don’t know, it’s all so confusing.

But on the other hand, the Haitians kicked the snot out of the French, so Napoleon sold us the Louisiana purchase, realizing France could never hold it anyhow, and would rather see us get it than England.

Vietnam and North Korea have been targets for China's expansion for a long time. The real reason that North Korea developed nukes is because they fear China. Now China has set its sights on Vietnam because it is the easier target. After they take over Vietnam, look for them to go for Laos next. China will go to war because of demographic and economic pressure. The Chinese military will not make the same mistakes that Japan made in WWII. China wants the entire Pacific for its own.

Of course the only thing stopping China is our strong leader obama. /s

They should have thought about their thousand year long series of battles with China when they were fighting us.

I don't agree with sending them squat even at a premium price.

I'm a 'Nam vet and was really glad to hear it.

I don't travel much in the North to I can't describe attitudes there, but I don't think its too much different. The other thing I see in the South - the churches are full. Lots of Christian churches in the south and on Sunday, they are literally over-flowing with people

its all made possible because of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The end of the cold war has really lightened communist oppression in Vietnam. Its still there, but now its more about the Party keeping control and making money. I also argue that the US presence at least kept Vietnam out of the Communist orbit long enough they avoid the worst purges and Marxist madness that Soviet Russia and Maoist China went through, so when the Eastern Bloc collapsed in 1990, it was easier for the South, at least, to return to a semi "normal" society.

Vietnam gave China a hard time during that 1979(?) war. China eventually overpowered them but at the cost of China’s image in the world.
The biggest problem was that the Chinese generals didn’t know how to run a war in a hostile environment.

Vietnamese parents sell their boys to be raped by homosexual tourists for cash.

I'm not pro or anti-Vietnamese, but there are bad/desperate/sick people everywhere, and I suspect the USA leads the world pederasty. Even our State Department is in the business of promoting male-on-male sex around the world.

Around 1979, I had a Vietnamese gardener who I learned was a full Colonel in the South Vietnam army. He told me of being captured by the NVA, escaping, and walking back to south before being able escape to the U.S., in the boatlift. He walked by night and during the day slept in swamps breathing through a reed. Remarkable stories and incredible courage and fortitude.

The French Indochina war in Vietnam ended in 1954. The first French nuclear test was in the Algerian Sahara desert in 1960.

French author Jules Roy suggests Admiral Radford discussed with the French the possibility of using nuclear weapons in support of the French garrison. John Foster Dulles reportedly mentioned the possibility of lending atomic bombs to the French for use at Dien Bien Phu. A similar source claims then British Foreign Secretary Sir Anthony Eden was aware of the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons in that region.

Pretty sketchy evidence of such a threat.

China’s plan it to overwhelm Vietnam with a huge army with tactics similar to the blitzkrieg. What is frighting about their plan is its callous disregard for human life. China expects to have massive troop losses and they don’t care. It has been reported that China’s military has orders to kill every male in Vietnam in their next war. China’s military wants the Vietnam women to live for their pleasure. In 2013 it was estimated that over 19 million men reach military age each year in China. When it comes to war, this one will be a bloodbath of epic proportions.

I see you are correct, and that I am wrong. I had the facts muddled, and I both apologize and thank you.

One thing to remember. China has a one child policy. All of those losses represent a family’s loss of their only child. That carries with it some obvious emotional and financial problems.
Then there is the risk to trade and the problem of maintaining control of Vietnam. I imagine there are lots of SKS’s lurking around.

The sex tourism trade is strong in that part of the world, particularly Thailand. I have gay friends who go to Thailand all the time.

True, but the leaders want to drastically reduce the male population. Their one child policy has led to a very unhealthy male/female ratio. Unmarried males are resorting to crime, and the human trafficking of women is getting out of hand. The last few unsuccessful revolutions in China were directly related to the large number of unmarried men. There is significant pressure being placed on the government to solve this problem. Efforts to stop the female infanticide and the aborting of females have failed. The latest estimates that I have seen is that there missing about 100 million woman.

China has a tenuous hold on its citizens anyway. They cannot tolerate an uprising.

China would gain nothing by invading Vietnam. They would lose a huge pile of money in boycotts. Using their military to intimidate people is a much better use of it.

I hope you are right and that I am wrong. The massive military buildup is getting scary. They are spending a fortune on their navy, and I doubt it is for domestic use. When our economy crashes I think that is when they will pull the trigger. They will make up excuses just like Hitler did to invade the Sudetenland. The liberals in this country don’t care about Vietnam, and I doubt that much pressure will be put on China if they invade that country. Considering all the human rights that China violates on a daily basis, I doubt they care what we could do to them. Also what better way to avoid another uprising then to get rid of those individuals most likely to cause trouble. China will also use the women of Vietnam as an incentive for its troops.

Like I said, I pray that you are correct. I have a bad feeling about this.
