A powerful earthquake struck near remote Japanese islands and shook most of the country Saturday evening, but it occurred well beneath the earth's surface and did not trigger a tsunami warning. Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and there were no reports of major damage.
The magnitude-8.5 offshore quake struck off the Ogasawara islands at a depth of 590 kilometres, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.8 and a depth of 678 kilometres.
The temblor was powerful enough to rattle most of Japan, from the southern islands of Okinawa to Hokkaido in the north. Buildings swayed in Tokyo about 1,000 kilometres north of the Ogasawara islands and disrupted some train services in the city. About 400 houses in Saitama prefecture, just north of the capital, were without power, according to the Tokyo Electric Power Co.

It was so deep, and so powerful that it set off USGS Earthquake sensors in California into thinking their were two local earthquakes. They called them "Phantom Events".
Lots of big aftershocks, as well.

There were tremors in India about the same time.
This is essentially as far away from Tokyo as Bermuda is to DC.
Footage from NHK Yokohama from the moment the earthquake hit.
Remember, this was hundreds of miles away!
Japan has had an incredibly rough go of it for at least the past five years. Prayers for the Japanese people.
Whoa.. thats BIG... with serious after shocks.. big as well..
And MSM will quickly blame this on “Global Warming.”
Also, pretty deep, which would tend to minimize damage at the surface.
Wowsers, that’s a big ‘un.
Likely the deepest ever recorded, as well.
Does GOD-ZILLA HAVE IT IN FOR YOU?
Wow. At least the elevators didn’t shut down. I saw in the Japanese news a lot of people stuck on the 52nd floor of a tower in Tokyo watching a Star Wars exhibit had no way down when this happened. Just freankin’ stupid if this had been any more serious.
I wonder if E.S.Blofeld, is distraught?
800+ miles from DC to Bermuda . Earthquake epicenter was 440 , about half as far away .
No. They are not common, but it happens and even deeper.
678 kilometers is phenomenally deep!
I thought the Bonins were 800 miles from Tokyo, I’ll have to check that :-)
