[California:] Davis ordinance seeks middle ground in sugary beverage debate

Do you want water or milk with that?

Servers at Davis city restaurants will soon be asking that question to customers ordering kids’ meals with beverages, under a new ordinance designed to discourage sugary soda consumption.

The ordinance, passed on a unanimous 5-0 vote Tuesday night, will require any Davis restaurant that offers a meal-with-drink kids’ menu to make water or milk, not soda, the primary option. Parents can still request soda at no extra charge, but must specifically ask for it.

By Sept. 1, Davis restaurants must prove compliance with the city ordinance by submitting a copy of their menu to city staff, showing they do not offer kids’ meals or do not offer soda as the automatic first choice.

IMO kids meals should avoid soda and should have milk, juice or bottled water choices.
Granted we don’t want fat kids because then they will NEVER have a good time in life but we can’t ban soda.

What next, a parents approval letter and if it happens too often some training by government for parents over the issue due to some new division of Children’s services?

you see, parents can’t figure out what’s good for the kids anymore. So we need a thousands of government laws to protect the children. or perhaps the parents are making the wrong choices on purpose. We should kill the parents.

You are entitled to your opinion. You are not entitled to tell others how to raise their kids.

For the most part you are right, but I remember the Rhino family who kept giving their kids 2 liter bottles of cola when they were thirsty along with a vast supply of pigs in a blanket and other such cr@p.

At the point the 5 year old girl was looking 9 months pregnant and nearing a couple of hundred pounds children's services stepped in as they should.

You fatten your kids up when little like that and they get no live where they will ever have a memory of being able to breath or run.

I'm afraid some parents are so stupid they force others into their lives to save the kids.

The five year old had heart issues with high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
The other two older ones were even worse.

I get your point, but there are some remarkable levels of stupid out there that sometimes are forced to step in.

Agree that moderation is good, but raising someone else’s kid is not your or my problem. We are inundated with information about healthy lifestyles and majority of caring parents do try to show their kids the right path. Education is there... You can’t fix stupid with some people. I abhor the thought of any public entity entering into parenting a child...CPS in many states is a complete failure and creating an anti family oppressive regime.
There is always some busybody who thinks they can force you to live the way they believe, this is exactly that.

Look how F’d up the kids raised in Baltimore had to be to riot like that.
Took a particular set of family ignorance to get to the point a kid goes out and riots.

There is a lot we can’t do, but we all know if a kid had two responsible parents in many cases those who resort to crime and all other kinds of stuff would be reduced.

There are lots of things that would be better to do that we can’t, like maybe only allowing only retirees or those who pay taxes to vote. Maybe 1 vote per each $10,000 of income tax earned and taxed.
Could you imagine the health of this country if the takers could no longer vote themselves the treasury and if the politicians had to only answer to those who work for a living or retirees?

when I was a child my parents never gave us soda. Sometimes we would juice but most of the time it was milk or water. This type of legislation is what happens when liberals influence parenting and parents become wimps at parenting.

This action by Davis seems to be a reasonable use of 10th Amendment-protected state powers.

Why is California part of the U.S. anymore really? It’s Commieland and everyone who wants a license to smoke weed feigns illness there. They invite more and more illegal immigrants and thinks there’s a never ending supply of money to pay for all their welfare programs. There’s also homonazis and progressive enemies of the state on every corner. Don’t even get me started on Hollywierd and their cast of liberal characters. The place is a zoo.

Yeah, Baltimore is the poster child for the Lyndon Johnson War on Poverty.

CA is certainly within its 10th Amendment powers to enact such a law, but this is taking the nanny-state to a ridiculous extreme.

There was never a war on poverty.

The Democrats were the anti-black folks of the past who had the slaves and later they were the Klan.
Before Johnson bought their souls for 30 pieces of welfare they black family had a very high rate of both married parents being in a family together.

The reason Johnson did the so called war doing welfare was because he wanted to make people vote Democrat for money.

Recently White House recordings of Johnson came out where he was discussing giving nigg@rs welfare and they will vote for us for the next two hundred years. Look it up on google and hear him for yourself.

Just how stupid are black people to be Democrats when those where their slave owners, the Klan and the folks who used to hose blacks out of schools?
The black vote/souls were bought by Democrats using the Treasury and their people and culture IMO have been damned ever since. It's a shame.

PS: Before Johnson and welfare almost all Blacks were Republicans due to the Klan and Slavery regarding Democrats.

Money bought them.

Ah, another chapter in the the old let me tell you how children should be raised saga. We didn’t have soda when I was growing up. It was either home squeezed lemonade, limeade or orangeade or raw milk fresh from the cow. My kids grew up drinking Kool-aid, sweet tea or root beer from a frosty mug. Of course that was also during the time when we didn’t have video games or iPads, TV was limited to one hour in the evenings and everybody played outside on real jungle gyms and rode bicycles without helmets. Not sure how we all survived without all the government help.

In late 1960’s, my Aunt would buy two quart bottles of Pepsi per week as a treat to her kids, in a household of four people. No one drank 16 oz. beverage then. More likely 6 or 4. Poured over ice it was a treat. My mom and Grandmother too... Did not spring for that. Lucky to have the Safeway brand Hawaiian punch soda.
