Great Lakes pilots are accountable when directing the transit of European vessels.
Some of my family members were there last Monday.
But only for commercial vessels.
That big ship is underway. By admiralty law, a ship is underway anytime it is not made fast to the pier. Even with tugs tied along side, that ship is legally underway.
Correct.
Recreational boats typically don’t sail into the Great Lakes via the St. Lawrence.
I knew several GL pilots when I was GM of a fueling business out of Duluth-Superior.
Saw it last year, beautiful place, saw the names of two relations, two brothers killed in the engine room. My son a CPO, re-enlisted there last fall. Beautiful pic of him and his son hoisting my Uncles flag with the Missouri in the background!
Terribly sorry to hear about the loss of your brothers there so long ago, that must have been unbearable for you and your family. That must be a magnificent pic of your son!
My nephew is a USMC officer stationed on Oahu. We met his wife and baby in Honolulu for dinner when we were there last week, but my nephew was away on FX on Hawaii, so we missed him.
I’m sorry that your son was not with you. My post, is a bit off, the two brothers were not mine, but shared my last name, Heidt. We believe they are related somewhat distantly, My dad was stationed there also at the same time frame on the Cruiser Richmond, but was reassigned a month before the attack. He used to say they all feared that something was going to happen. He got out and worked at a defense industry in Brooklyn, Ny, but re-Enlisted in 43. His ship a small DE, escorted the USS Missouri on her first war patrol. While in Ulithe (sp)? The small Carrier docked next to them was hit by a Kamakazi. Then later they almost rolled over in a Typhoon. Lucky I made it here!
Ulithi. Very close!
You have quite the family history. Here’s some advice I wish I had taken to heart before my parents were gone...find out all you can about those years, and get it written down so your heirs will know their place in history.
Thanks, I should.
Probly going for a photo op.
I bet the Captain of the Port is not pleased.
They were within yards of hitting the submerged Arizona, let alone trashing the landing pier.
