State Rep. Joel Kleefisch (left) and Rep. Nick Milroy (center) unveil their bill to legalize blaze pink attire for hunters. They are joined by UW-Madison Professor Majid Sarmadi (rear) and State Rep. David Steffen (right).
Madison Wisconsin hunters likely would be the first in the nation allowed to wear blaze pink instead of the traditional orange in the woods under a bill announced Tuesday by a Republican and a Democrat.
State Reps. Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc) and Nick Milroy (D-South Range) said at a Capitol news conference they hoped the attire would encourage more Wisconsinites to hunt and appeal to women and new hunters.
"Wisconsin has historically had some of the highest participation rates in hunting... and we've seen a decrease in this number in recent years," Milroy said. "It's my hope that this will become universally acceptable and create revenue for some of these programs that we're talking about.
"There has been a recent trend amongst manufacturers to appeal to young women. You see a lot of camouflage pink products available now."
Majid Sarmadi, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor and textile expert, said his lab analysis of fluorescent pink proved it had similar or better visibility to humans as blaze orange, and therefore would be just as safe for hunters to wear.

I saw that, that’s why I responded.
Trivia... 8.0% of men have some form of color blindness, while only 0.5 % of women do. The percentage of men with color blindness goes up with the percentage of whites in the population. I wonder if some hunting accidents are attributed to color blindness?
Coming Next Year: Clear, Sparkly Hunting Vests. “Dazzle your prey with gold and silver sequins!”
FWIW, Rep. Kleefisch has two daughters I know he wants to be hunters like he is. He is one of the most avid hunters I know. He even hosts a TV show called “Kill it, clean it, cook it.”
Nice to know how our tax dollars are being spent. I suppose all of the state’s problems have been solved so there was little left to do. And it was a bi-partisan effort!
Thank goodness all those who felt excluded from the hunting experience before because they could not abide the blaze orange will now be able to participate.
Really, half of what I read in the news used to be the kind of thing you read only on the Onion. Sad state of affairs.
Hunt pink? Sounds like something a lot of college boys will be doingthe (and every) weekend.
Here’s a video of Rep. Kleefisch’s young daughter shooting a wild hog.
I do think this is because he wants his daughters to fully participate in hunting.

Fabulous!
I guess I sort of like where they are coming from here, but I’m surprise to learn there is a law about this.
I’d like to hear from Mrs. Palin on this subject!
“8.0% of men have some form of color blindness, while only 0.5 % of women do.”
I knew men were more prone to this than women but I didn’t know by how much!
Just yesterday I showed hubby a pair of pants I bought, the care label that tells you how to wash them has pinkish red threads on a purple-y label.
Hubby is red/green color blind, I said: can you even see there are words on there?
It’s just about the silliest excuse for a label I’ve ever seen, even holding it up in the bright sunlight you can barely read it.
Pretty silly IMO....makes me think of Code Pink.
I can’t imagine they spend too much time on this. No more than some business spends planning the company picnic or the new “Employee of the Month” coffee mugs.
I’m guessing this goes to a much larger effort of a PR campaign by the state and tourism boards and hunting businesses to promote women hunting.
My daughter just got into shotgun shooting after Christmas. (She tagged along as her older brother and I went to the range.) She’s REALLY good. She now wants to go hunting this fall. I can’t wait!
I say they need special hats too.
Bill before Wisconsin legilature to make blaze pink legal to wear for wisconsin hunting.
It’s prettier than blaze orange, which seems to be our state color!
FReep mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
It’s great that he wants his girls to go hunting but how were they prevented from doing so without the pink camo legislation?
This is the type of thing that reaffirms some of the public’s belief that our leaders are out of touch with the rest of us.
At least it’s not lavender!
I seem to recall from way back to my hunter safety courses that blaze orange was chosen because it was the only color that does not occur in nature. I don’t know if it IS the ONLY one, but it is one of few.
Pink occurs frequently and any hunter worth their salt would never wear it. However, this is simply another case, on a long list of instances, where politicos and bearucrats don’t care about reality. They only care about appearances....
Well, we need to do SOMETHING to keep the youngsters interested. I don’t see targeting WOMEN, I see targeting YOUTH - teens, especially, and female teens all the more.
Beau is an AVID hunter - raccoon, bear, elk, deer - as well as a Treeing Walker Coon Hound & Plott Hound breeder. His various Clubs are filled to the brim with ‘old guys’. And while they sponsor a number of youth hunts each year, less and less modern-day kids are interested in life in the woods.
A very, very sad situation.
