The Columbus Police Department recruited the inmates with the help of the state prisons agency and produced a YouTube video in which the offenders share their how-to tips

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Police looking to educate the public about ways to prevent break-ins turned to the experts — a trio of convicted burglars.

The Columbus Police Department recruited the inmates with the help of the state prisons agency and produced a YouTube video in which the offenders share their how-to tips. Most of the suggestions are common-sense warnings about locking up, keeping blinds drawn and not storing valuables in cars.

A few recommendations stand out for originality: "Sometimes set it off so people know it's there. Don't just buy it and never set it off." That's William Coffman, of Franklin County, serving time for burglary and aggravated robbery, on advertising that your home alarm system works.

Wait until someone “sets off”our dogs.Somebody’s going to the ER to get stitched up. That's if I'm not home.It will be so much worse if I am.

I have a mean S.O.B. of a German Shepherd. A burglar may get into the house, but they ain’t getting out.

I thought interesting the convict who said that if you heard a noise in your house, call the police, don’t start spraying away with your AK-47. At the same time the police put up a banner across the bottom reminding viewers that Ohio law allows a homeowner to shoot intruders in their homes.

I have a friendly German Shepard. She never ever barks at people. Last night when I was taking her for a walk, but saw three guys that looked like thugs (pants hanging down) walking on the other side of the street. She went bonkers barking, snarling and snapping and trying to break from the leash. It was the weirdest thing!!!

I have a German Shepherd. She looks mean and has a good bark. All a burglar would need to to break in my house is a tennis ball.

I used to take my German Shepherd to the local university as a puppy to socialize him. Sometime around 9 months of age he started going bonkers on me with certain people and I had to stop taking him. A half dozen people could walk by me with no problem, then someone with a less desirable air would and he’d go nuts. God help anyone that tries to break in. They won’t live to tell about it.

We had a German shepherd in our college fraternity house and he went insane at the sight of any black man. It was really weird. You’d think he had been beaten for years by a black guy based on that behavior.

My garage had a door that led into the house.

It had a bolt lock on it, but what I would do is save my paper silhouette targets from a day at the firing range and would post one with a tight group on the door.

I would place another on the passenger seat of my Corvette convertible, as well as placing a few more in or in view or the parts of my home most vulnerable to a break-in.

This is an inexpensive yet effective way of keeping the bad guys away.

I’m going to read the article next. I wonder if they mention firearm ownership?

Hence the wisdom of keeping a tennis ball at had if you are burglarizing houses.
