Thad Cochran Marries Longtime Aide (Wife Died in December)
Politico ^ | 5/25/15 | Louis Nelson

The Mississippi senator’s previous wife died in December.

Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran married his longtime executive assistant, Kay Webber, over the holiday weekend, according to a report from the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss.

The 77-year-old Republican wed Webber, who has worked for him since 1981, in a private ceremony in Gulfport, Mississippi, on Saturday. Cochran’s staff, which had denied any knowledge of an impending wedding as recently as last week, released the news in a one-sentence statement. Webber is also 77. Story Continued Below

Cochran’s previous wife of 50 years, Rose Cochran, died last December. She spent the final 13 years of her life in a nursing home, where she battled dementia and was mostly bedridden.

Thad Cochran’s relationship with Webber became a point of controversy during his bid to win a Republican primary and seek reelection last year. His GOP challenger, Chris McDaniel, accused the senator of having an affair with Webber amid a hotly contested primary campaign. An aspiring political blogger, Clayton Kelly, was arrested during the campaign for taking pictures of Rose Cochran in her bed that he intended to use as evidence of an affair. Charges against him are still pending.

The senator’s office denied the allegation, and Cochran, the second-longest-serving senator in Mississippi history, went on to win a seventh full term in November.

A lot of recent convenient deaths have certainly made the senator’s life simpler.

Lots of reasons to not like Thad Cochran; this one is low on the list. She worked for him a very long time and his wife was pretty much out of it for a very long time.

Marrying him off is less controversial than hiring a live in nurse. I’ve read that Thad is senile. He can barely dress himself. He reads what his staff puts in front of him.

So a 77 year old man married a 77 year old woman... Now the mans wife died last december, but she had been suffering from dementia and in a nursing home for the last 13 years....

So, this is a scandal?

If you show me evidence of abuse or neglect by the man to his first wife before her death because he was spending time with this woman, you got a scandal, but otherwise this is just busy bodying as far as I’m concerned.

The Democrats have known about his sick wife and living arrangements for years, but unlike certain members of the Tea Party they had to good tactical sense to leave it alone, knowing it could create a backlash of sympathy among undecided voters. Maybe if McDaniel’s supporters had left this issue alone and had not let their anger blind them to the tactical realities of campaigning, they could have had a better chance of winning. But then again, that election is a study in disciplined electioneering versus undisciplined rage. The Mississippi Tea Party succeeded at what even That Cochran’s handlers could not do; they made him a sympathetic figure to everyone who had lost a loved one to Alzheimer’s.

Tea Party had that election in the bag if they had been more disciplined.
