Live coverage: Solemn tributes for Kerrie Orozco at services, on streets
Omaha World Herald ^ | 26 May 2015 | By Jeffrey Robb, Christopher Burbach and Maggie O’Brien

A saddened, solemn community folded Officer Kerrie Orozco into its embrace Tuesday before letting her go. Hundreds of family members, friends and colleagues in blue attended Orozco’s funeral at St. John’s Catholic Church at Creighton University. Law enforcement officers and firefighters from around the Omaha metro area — and around the country — flowed over by the thousands into additional viewing areas. And Orozco’s fellow citizens lined her funeral procession route from downtown Omaha to her final resting spot in Council Bluffs to show respect for her service. The Rev. William Bond, who presided over the Catholic funeral service, called that respect good and beautiful.

I know. I saw several people wearing the special T shirts at HyVee on Sunday, and I almost started sobbing right there in the checkout line. It is “personal” to almost everyone around here, don’t you think?

Hundreds of supporters along the route of the procession unfurled white sheets with a blue line across them, to shield mourners from a handful of protesters from Westboro Baptist Church....

Those frkn monsters.

About 200 members of the Nebraska and Iowa Patriot Guard lined 24th Street holding American flags...

Thank you, PGR!

Orozco’s fellow officers will surround her at the service. Officers from the north gang unit will serve as honorary pallbearers, and a number of local law enforcement agencies will carry out police duties so that Omaha officers can attend the funeral....

Just chirrun toinin they lives aroun.

She killed her murderer - I'm sure he had associates who fled the scene.

On TV this morning, they said no police would respond to “property damage only” car accidents today (similar to what they do when it is icy, and there are loads of fender-bender crashes).

I hope the criminals had enough respect to lay low for the day.

Did you read about the “police badge” monument that a steelworker in Woodbine, IA made?

When this shooting was first posted on FR, there were several people who questioned the newspaper report that stated the killer used a Glock with a drum magazine.

They had pictures of it this weekend and the newspaper was correct. It was a Glock (exact model number unknown). The magazine was an aftermarket drum magazine. The slide was jammed back when it was dropped.

I have seen a few drum magazines for Glocks and they were supposed to hold 50 rounds. The killer did not shoot 50 rounds, so I think it was a jam rather than locked back empty. The only ones I have seen were 9mm, but they may be available in other calibers.

The newspaper in this town has an editorial policy like other big-city newspapers — guns bad, ban guns. However, they seem to do a good job of making identifications. I just wish they would make a point of saying in their articles that the guns were illegally obtained. The killer here was a convicted felon, so he could not have gotten it legally.

The police officer was shot from the front just above her body-armor. It went through her body and was trapped between her body and the back of the vest. The bullet cut a major artery and she bled out quickly. The sister of the killer attacked the other policemen (hitting and spitting on them) after her brother was shot, shouting that she hoped the “stupid cop” died painful death. She was taken into custody and, unfortunately, was not shot.

That’s the difference between the heartland and the armpitlands you see on either coast.
