“View of the U.S. Capitol Building during the fire which destroyed the studio of Artist Chas. Moberly & considerably damaged the House Document Room – fire engines with ladders going up the side of the Capitol.”

This picture of the January 1930 fire at the Capitol Building shows firefighters in Washington DC battling the blaze. The damage was done, and some rooms on the House side were destroyed, namely the above artist’s studio. The Capitol Building was most famously set aflame in August of 1814, during the War of 1812, by the British in retaliation for similar American actions in Toronto. Hear more stories of Capitol Hill on our Capitol Hill Tour, which revisits the Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and many other locations on the hill.
