With key provisions of the Patriot Act in limbo, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky hopes to use the weeklong congressional break to stir grassroots opposition to government collection of Americans phone dataand to continue ginning up support for his Republican presidential bid.
The Senate will return from its Memorial Day recess May 31, a day earlier than planned after Mr. Paul on Saturday blocked renewal of the antiterror laws provisions that expire June 1. One House Democrat supporting the program called the outcome a catastrophe.

Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina support an extension of the NSAs existing authority. So too do New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who both defended the Patriot Act at a recent Oklahoma forum for presidential aspirants, the Associated Press reported.
There is ample evidence that the Patriot Act has been a tool to keep us safe, ample evidence, Mr. Bush said at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference. There is no evidence of anyones civil liberties being violated because of it.

Good let that monster expire.
And get to a real solution that would actually make us safer. That would be stopping and reversing the invasion of the US. Then we could work on stabilizing US citizenry and regaining our footing as a civilized nation.
Rand Paul's getting a real lot of traction for telling it like it is on the issue of personal liberty.
On this, I stand with Rand.
Let’s see...
Marco “Viva La Raza” Rubio, Lindsey Grahamnesty, Chris “Fatboy” Christie and Jeb “The First Mexican President” Arbusto are all for this.
Don’t need to go any further! Whatever they’re for, any sensible Conservative gotta be against.
Go Rand. Keep up the heat on the Slave Power.
He doesn’t have to stir much. I already think it should have been named the Totalitarian Act.
indeed
me too
Rand’s cause would be more credible if his campaign team wasn’t sending out spam to my email in-box seeking donations.
Okay, let’s close our eyes and pretend domestic terrorism isn’t occurring. I buy the fact that the Patriot Act hasn’t been successful at stopping a domestic terrorist attack.
But let’s not conclude that Americans Somalis aren’t returning from Syrian and Yemen with US passports and that we don’t need the capacity to monitor their activity.
If Rand wanted to be credible, he would enlist some experts in security intelligence (which he is not expert in) and recommend some changes to the act
