There weren't as many fireworks at the Memorial Day weekend box office this year as newcomer "Tomorrowland" disappointed with a $32.2 million debut.

The science-fiction adventure stars George Clooney and was directed by Brad Bird of "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" renown. The Disney release is expected to pull in a lackluster $40.7 million for the four-day period.

"Tomorrowland" had been expected to generate $40 million over the three-day period and $50 million over the four-day stretch. With a $180 million price tag, Disney faces an uphill climb to profitability. Not helping matters, overseas figures were an underwhelming $26.7 million.

Costing at least $280 million to make and market, “Tomorrowland” will take in about $40.7 million between Friday and Monday, according to box office analysts, or about 20 percent less than anticipated going into the holiday weekend.

Overseas — where Hollywood summer tentpoles depend upon doing sizable business and Clooney is a big star — Tomorrowland underwhelmed. It fared best in Russia ($3.6 million), followed by Mexico ($2.8 million).

This year’s ‘John Carter’, although many say that movie was actually pretty good; it was the title and marketing that sucked.

The premise of this movie seems unappealing to me.

Just another on an increasingly long list of actors and actresses I wouldn't waste my money to see...not even at Redbox.

Is this a pro-gay Disney film, a warning about climate change, or both? Kinda worried about their version of “tomorrow”.

I saw this today and liked it. It got so so reviews.
While the plot could have been fleshed out better the theme of the movie was one, I thought, of hope, optimism, and also unrealized potential.

The movie started out at the 1964 World's Fair, which along with the 1939 World's Fairs, both in New York, showcased a future that those at the time thought was attainable.

Along with the movie 2001 that built upon this we have never reached that potential. Now it is gloom and doom on a global level lead by the Climate Changers, Terrorism, abject left-wing Socialism, and Communists. All of which seek to control all of us and impose a Social Utopia that can never be, exist, or even work.

Anyway I thought it a pretty good thought provoking movie and will watch it again.

Agreed, and combined with a bad economy (despite the rosy proclamations to the contrary from Obama and his minions in the MSM, most people either cannot or do not want to spend $15 for an 1.5 hours of Hollywood garbage. I suspect many are like me, and are willing to wait 6 months until the movie is available on cable.

I just tried to read the plot summary on wikipedia because I wanted to know “where they were going” with this propaganda. I could not follow the plot summary much at all. My summary of the summary is: “A lot of people do a lot of things, then the film ends.”

>>“A lot of people do a lot of things, then the film ends.”

That describes most action/sci-fi movies made after CGI became the centerpiece of movies. If they have a plot at all, it centers around “stupid humans destroyed an environment and caused a war/plague/dystopia but now ONE smart human has the key to fixing it”.
