John Cornyn: Patriot Act has never been more important
Dallas Morning News ^ | 5/19/15 | John Cornyn

After the Sept. 11 attacks, Americans began to look at our national security in a different light. No longer were the lines of battle neatly drawn and enemies easily identified. In the 21st century, threats would be constantly evolving and growing even more complex.

The crisis in Syria and Iraq has illustrated just how dangerous these threats are, both abroad and at home. In February, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center estimated more than 20,000 foreign fighters had joined the Islamic State or other related groups in Syria — among them, some 3,000 were from Western countries. More than 150 were from the United States.

Today, those who can’t travel to the Middle East are offered another option by terrorist recruiters abroad: Pick up your weapons and fight where you are.

Earlier this month, FBI Director James Comey described the widespread nature of this threat, noting that the FBI is working on hundreds of investigations across the country. According to Comey, all 56 FBI field divisions have open inquiries regarding suspected cases of homegrown terrorism. Sadly, we saw this type of Islamic State-inspired terror play out in Garland two weeks ago. Thanks to quick action by law enforcement, innocent lives were spared this time.

As your elected representative in Washington, one of my responsibilities is to make sure our intelligence and law enforcement officials are equipped to fight those who want to harm us.

One tool used to effectively disrupt terrorist networks inside our borders is the Patriot Act.

Three key provisions of the act are set to expire at the end of the month, including a section that allows the National Security Agency to access certain types of data, such as phone records. I believe our national security will be put at greater risk if the provisions are

Sorry , John. USA survived 200 years without massive electronic spying on our citizens. Repatriate Obama’s Muslims to their own countries and End the spying on Americans We do not agree to give up our liberties just so Obama can import all his anti- American Islamonazi comrades from every damned krapistan on earth to “transform” us.

‘FBI agents can’t point to any major terrorism cases they’ve cracked thanks to the key snooping powers in the Patriot Act, the Justice Department’s inspector general said in a report Thursday that could complicate efforts to keep key parts of the law operating.

Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz said that between 2004 and 2009, the FBI tripled its use of bulk collection under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which allows government agents to compel businesses to turn over records and documents, and increasingly scooped up records of Americans who had no ties to official terrorism investigations.’
– From the Washington Times article: FBI Admits No Major Cases Cracked with Patriot Act Snooping Powers
‘Speaking at an American Law Institute event this week, FBI Director James Comey warned that a PATRIOT Act sunset would “severely” affect his agency. The FBI relies heavily on the soon-to-expire provisions of the law to obtain specific business records — from library records to gun ownership data — and wiretaps for multiple devices, he said.

“If I lose these tools, it’s a huge, huge problem,” Comey said. “We use [Section 215 to obtain specific records] fewer than 200 times per year, but when we use it, it matters tremendously.”
But not for terrorism, and the Patriot Act was specifically passed to deal with terrorism.’

My two cents...If they hadn’t abused it, hadn’t lied when confronted, they would probably be trusted enough to keep it.

Running Op Jade HELM as a mosque targeting exercise would be WAY superior to expecting the NSA to do any good.

What ... an ... idiot. This should disqualify him from public office.

He forgot to say what her really thinks ... “it’s never been more important to control Americans”.

Pass the Patriot Act ... kill a Republic.

Drop it, Cornball. The answer to security in our homeland is not taking privacy from citizens and conducting body cavity searches of grandmothers at our airports. It’s kicking the mohhamedans out of our country; they make up 99.999% of the terror threat, not the citizens whose rights you are sworn to protect.

Cornyn is one of those little men George Orwell talked about who enable totalitarianism.

We’ve got to build that wall around our state and keep the idjits out!

The Patriot Act should have named the Totalitarian Act.
It has NEVER lead to the capture of a single terrorist.
All it has done is expand the police state.

Is Hasan alive? Was HE detected?
Why are his supporters still in power?

Is ISIS thriving in Mexico and S.A?
Why are their supporters still in power?

Did the Boston Terrorist even need a Passport?
Why were they not stopped?
Why are his supporters still in power?

Remember this week to continue to call your Senators office to encourage a NO vote on extending the Patriot Act.

Having US suffering their spying and political interference while they are busy supplying, if not creating our enemies is a crime against the American People as proscribed by our Constitution and it must be stopped.

John Cornyn is the poster child why the 17th amendment was not a good idea.

Once in office he has more campaign money than god.
