President Barack Obama has adjusted his goal of having 1 million plug-in vehicles on the road by this year's end, much to the disappointment of many electric vehicle enthusiasts.
The change of heart comes six years after Obama signed an executive order mandating electric cars with the intent of the government buying 1 million EVs by 2015, according to Bloomberg. However, the president scaled back this objective in March, due to sales and government purchases not meeting expectations.
The decline in consumer interest in electric vehicles, which lack the infrastructure that gasoline-powered vehicles have, played a significant role. U.S. consumers bought about 290,000 electric and hybrid cars from 2009 to 2014, which only account for 3 percent of overall sales.
"The zealots, the hypesters, the enthusiasts created an environment that wasn't ever going to be a reality," said Brett Smith, a program director for the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich. "This got going in the summer of 2008 when gasoline was $5 a gallon in California. The world expected gasoline prices to go up and up and up and technology to solve it. Two of those things didn't happen."

Apparently, the proven liar Obama did not get the memo.
If a government program is not working, you are supposed to throw more money at it.
It is never reality that troubles them, only the perceptions of the duped.
Don’t disparage the Fairy Tale Treasury. You can learn some life lessons from that book.
No surprise indeed. And what’s even better is, not even subsidies can save dirty green energy at lower gas prices.
Bye-bye electric cars.
But we've wasted who knows how many hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars trying to launch this Marxist's dream of electric cars. More of somebody else's money down another socialist's rathole.
“OBAMA ADMINISTRATION SCALING BACK ELECTRIC CAR GOALS”
Actually, I think the laws of physics scaled their “goals” back for them some time ago.
Gas is $4 plus in California, for a variety of reasons.
Zero also wanted 54 mpg fleet averages in the near future. Never will happen. My liberal friends have a Prius, but also a Buick SUV. They will never give up the SUV.
I forget to add:
“OBAMA ADMINISTRATION SCALING BACK ELECTRIC CAR GOALS”
Actually, I think the laws of physics scaled their “goals” back for them some time ago. Besides, the electric car “goals” already accomplished what was really intended: billions of taxpayer dollars funneled into the hands of Democrat crony “capitalists” including enough for quid pro quo kickbacks, uh, I mean campaign “donations”, as well as a new permanent constituency dependent on continuous free money from the taxpayers along with their new set of lobbyists.
IMHO, cars powered by other than fossil fuels will be viable. Someday. Maybe 20 or 30 years from now.
By then, all cars will be self-driving, supposedly.
Electric cars already proved themselves, were gathered up, and smashed. In the 70s.

What if batteries could be charged in only a few minutes?

What's interesting is that Europe is interested, too. Their recent infatuation with turbodiesel engines show that it wasn't worth the higher NOx and particulate emissions in order to get lower CO2 emissions; that's why all the major European automakers are building hybrid supercars essentially to test technologies that will filter down to lower-cost vehicles over the next ten years.
Obama finds out central planning really doesn’t work.
Doesn’t care.
The only surprising thing is that the administration
didn’t comment that electrik kar sales double with
new five year plan.
IMHO, the charging time of batteries means far less than the frequency of charging.
If an electric car can be produced that has a 300+ mile range on a charge, I’ll be impressed.
