My son calmly walked out into the living room Friday morning. I had no idea he was home, having gone to bed early. I about jumped out of my skin. He’s growing a moustache. Ugh!

We have her Mom's Youth Bike, all restored, and hanging from the ceiling of the garage. We'll have get her, her own trike when the time comes.

Nate and then Sam are getting their Dad's TRIKE. It only has a Little restoration work needed. His Dad's youth Bike Is Restored and hangs from the garage ceiling as well.

Nate just loves his Dad's American Flyer's Wagon that “HE” and his Dad restored.

NOTICE a trend here?

It was much better today so I’m thinking that the confusion was caused by the medications she was taking for pain.

Today they will probably be making a decision as to what facility she will be transferred to for therapy. She did get up about 4 times for short periods.

Connie: Rebeca Mauleón - El Manisero, ( The Peanut Salesman ), [ I'm sure that some of you will recognize this song. The song was reasonably successful in this country in the 1950s. Ms. Maleón applies Progressive Jazz to it. ]

I’ve got quite a bit more coming up tonight at the Canteen, and at the Canteen Chapel this evening, I’ll be posting settings of psalms by classical composers. If you go to last week’s Canteen Chapel, you’ll see the beginning of that effort.

LATE SCHUBERT PIANO PIECES

This is in 3/4 and marked “allegretto.” The A-flat section moves between the minor and major, and the C# minor central panel is as bleak as any late Schubert. The A-flat section returns.

LATE SCHUBERT PIANO PIECES

Schubert wrote a lot of single piano pieces, most of them dances, jotted down on music paper after he improvised them at a party. But he also wrote non-dance material over the years, and he put them in his trunk, pulling them out for publication in the last few years of his young life.

This piece in 9/8 and marked “andantino,” a favorite Schubert marking, is in A-B-A-C-A format. You can just float through the “A” panel. The “B” panel is in a bleak and remote F# minor. The “C” panel returns to F# minor for a passionate outburst before the “A” panel returns.

Schubert: Musical Moment in A-flat, D. 780/2

THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

String Quartet in B-flat, Op.18/6

Beethoven saves the strongest quartet for last in this collection. He starts off with a simple theme, marked “allegro con brio,” that could be taken for Haydn. The second subject appears in the correct key of F Major. The development is a bit harsh at times. The recap has moments where the music veers into the dark keys of B-flat minor and E-flat minor, but it ends decisively.

The second movement is marked “adagio ma non troppo,” “at rest but don’t fall asleep.” It starts with a fine violin tune in E-flat, but in the middle section it turns black with spidery, whispering 32nd notes in E-flat minor. The opening returns.

The scherzo, marked “allegro,” is one of those puzzles where Lou expects you to find the beat and meter. The gaiety is more manic than innocent. The middle section goes into a strange, shouting B-flat minor before returning to the opening material.

The listener expects a bright finale, but Lou throws a curve by starting with an “adagio” titled “Melancholy.” His musical material is the second subject of the first movement, but it darkens when the cello sinks chromatically. The key drifts aimlessly, then moves into the spidery motif from the slow movement in his favorite dark keys.

The finale itself begins, marked “allegretto quasi allegro,” a spirited German dance. But the color and rhythm aren’t quite right. The first violin works via the darker middle strings, and the accompaniment lurches with accents on the off-beats. Then after a crashing halt, Melancholy returns. The dance and Melancholy struggle to find a balance, striving to find the correct key. Then it rushes to a bright conclusion. Melancholy is banished – for the moment!

Beethoven: String Quartet in B-flat, Op. 18/6

Next week it’s two violin sonatas.
